let's say i was looking for something fairly sleek, an acceptable lower cost alternative to n.d.c. or paul smith...

I don't think you'll find something you're 100% happy with, but I'd say the wingtips will get you closest. For example the McClains (although they are a balmoral). I think there is a wingtip derby, but the name escapes me - maybe the MacNeil?

Also, the traditional loafers (eg the tasseled loafers) work with jeans.

Edit - The Bel Air looks nice as well.

I also have a pair of AE McAllister wingtips in black which I wear a lot. I think the model has been discontinued though.

I like the Delray in Chili. It's my favorite split toe shoe.

This totally hinges on personal preference, but I like the weybridge in chili and the soho in cognac.

The MacNeil it is...and one could do no better in the AE price range!

Leeds is pretty chunky. Also, in shell cordovan it costs as much or more than most PS shoes.

As someone who has 6 pairs of AEs and knows the line up quite well, I'd have to vote for the Soho, the Bel-Air, or the Mora.

I don't think cap toe bals work with jeans, personally.
