I have one extremely similar if not EXACTLY the same. I paid $500 for it from Bloomingdales and the retail was $795. So i would NOT pay that much for this one. Go check out bloomies.

local stores usually beat the ebay price by a good margin.
I'm sure they do, as often the local store is selling the item at a loss, also, they do not have to invest the large amount of labor required to sell an item on ebay. Putting a large inventory on ebay is prohibitive, that's why you don't see more stores doing it. On the other hand, ebay sellers who go through the work involved, move items from a small local market to a global market, for which they deserve to be (but rarely are) compensated.

BTW, I'm not defending this particular auction, I'm just a little tired of hearing this repeated every time the subject of ebay comes up.

My experience is the exact opposite. Ebay is by and large far cheaper than any brick and mortar store I have been in, even for items on final sale.

Perhaps I should qualify my statement. IF you live in a major metropolitan area, and IF you are willing to spend a LOT of time shopping, religiously attend sales, and fight all the other guys for the merchandise then you will frequently be able to get stuff for lower than ebay prices. Of course you are investing a lot of time into the equation.

Sample sales - yes. But end of season clearances at regular stores, I still don't see the kind of prices I've gotten from, say, you. Certainly not on big ticket items (shoes, suits).

And Ebay sellers should definitely be compensated for their time etc.

I agree that the ebay seller deserves to be compensated for opening products up to a broader market. We buyers still have to fight other guys for the merchandise, though. As ebay has gotten more popular, the real steals are much fewer and farther between. One almost has to find a seller that doesn't know what he has so that it's poorly advertised and overlooked by other bidders.
