Following on the two fine answers above, I'll add five items that I consider essential because they're so entirely non-essential. No charcoal suit here.

1. A really fine, full-length umbrella. One of the most luxurious things a man can buy, in my book. I have a few I love. One I found at a junk store for $7.50, and it probably didn't cost much more than that new. But it's sturdy, pencil-thin and has a lovely handle. So much nicer than parading around with a cheap plastic model. I actually look forward to rainy days.

2. A nice pen. Something thick enough to write with comfortably, and just expensive enough to warrant keeping up with.

3. A good razor. It's nice to begin the day with a small touch of elegance, and with a razor with enough weight to be felt in the hand.

4. A sportcoat not fit for serious business. I'm thinking of one I have in particular. It's a tatty old hacking jacket, with a wasp waist and a bold pattern. It's had the daylights beaten out of it, and I love it all the more for that very reason. (Substitute any other clothing item for "sportcoat," as long as it's unwearable to the office. And if you do wear it to the office anyway, all the better.)

5. Mechanical watch, particularly a manual wind. There's something soothing about the ritual of winding a watch, and it's one of the more pleasant reminders of our mortality.

I could come up with tons of others, but I'll stop at the requested five.

If you can't make a good joke after being flattened by a bus you have no right to call yourself a stand-up.

Hard to top any of the above responses -- which just goes to show the talent, humility and frankness of the members of this forum -- yet I'll offer my two cents:

1. a navy suit
2. a white shirt and white linen hankie
3. an elegant tie (color/pattern tbd)
4. a good mechanical watch
5. and the best pair of brown shoes you can afford

1. A scathing wit capable of putting boorish people in their place.

2. Good grooming habits.

3. An adequate rotation of suits that fit well.

4. At least one very heirloom-quality mechanical watch.

5. An adequate rotation of high-quality shoes, both dress and casual.

And don't forget, every gentleman should have a handgun.
