Only 5, huh? I guess I'll lean more towards the basics:

    1. Good watch (seems we're al in agreement; as recent ads in magazines will tell you, it's the most telling thing you wear-- even more than shoes)
    2. A classic tan trenchcoat
    3. Grey flannel trousers
    4. A solidly constructed italian or english white shirt
    5. Dark suit, preferably navy or grey and single breasted

Kitsune-san: Very well chosen. Some Kaga-isms: 1. "Good manners and handmade shoes" -- the mark of a gentleman according to Bryan Ferry 2. A well-cut suit. Whether your definition of a well-cut suit is a Dior Homme bumfreezer or a bespoke Darren Beaman sebiro, this matters. Used, new, price, whatever. 3. Something from Hermes, be it a watch, a belt, a pen, cufflinks... and hopefully not a tie. 4. The perfect jeans and the perfect white T-shirt. You don't have to go to Zimmerli for this one. 5. A cashmere sweater 6. Gold-braided midnight-blue silk-lined cape, the better with which to shout, ALLEZ CUISINE.........

I think Foxx is closest here. A lot of people are putting things down that take a certain kind of guy to wear. For example, a black turtleneck? Huh? I can't wear turtlenecks period, and I know few men who can without looking either effeminate or fat.

Anyways, I think the list should be more general, which is why Foxx comes closest.

    Here's mine:

    (1) One perfectly fitting dress shirt -- a bad shirt ruins everything.
    (2) One great pair of shoes -- could be black or brown, but they must be elegant and high quality.
    (3) One great dark suit.
    (4) One perfectly fitting, high quality pair of jeans -- could be Gap, could be PDC, but they can't be something you paint in.
    (5) One great cashmere or merino wool sweater -- pair this item with jeans, a blazer, dress pants, or even a suit. So versatile, so comfortable, and unlike a turtleneck, something almost every man looks good in.

    1. A Darren Beaman 4-piece suit system in a hard-wearing 13 oz cloth (uh, does that count for 1 item or 4? I'll assume 1 as it is a system) 2. Well made shoes, preferably English 3. A collection of well-cut light blue shirts 4. A knit silk tie, if I could only have one it would have to be navy coloured 5. I suppose some means of keeping your trousers in place is essential as well, either a belt or braces Personally, I consider a watch inessential. I don't wear one and hope I never have to.

I'd break this down into 3

    1. a sense of strong personal style
    2. an apprectiation of quality
    3. good manners
    4. charm

    1. good shoes (black, boxcalf or cord, handmade)
    2. cashmere overcoat
    3. handmade shirts
    4. dark, well made suits (s)
    5. heavy, thick silk tie (s)

    1. a good watch, maybe with a story
    2. a good pen, maybe with a story
    3. at least one handkerchief
    4. another accessory, like for instance a sterling tiffany belt buckle, with a story
    5. a good pocket notebook, perhaps a smythson, or a good PDA.

so I went over budget, the story of my life...

Ok, I only read up to the first page, but I didn't see this very versatile important item mentioned:

Nice fitting white dress shirt. (looks good with everything)

Also I nice pair of cardovan shoes and belt. (goes great with dark jeans and dark khaki's or brown slacks)

My grandfather was told me that a gentleman should always have:
    1- A good watch
    2- a good leather belt
3- a good pair of leather shoes

I believe his advice was wise, as it will dress up any combination of clothes that I wear. I know it does not add to up to 5, but it has worked for me.

Tough to narrow this down, but I would have to say:
    1. A Blue Blazer ( I like a DB)
    2. A Pair of Grey Flannels
    3. Brown Suede Shoes
    4. A Camel Hair Topcoat or a set of Evening Clothes. (Tie)
    5. A Clean White Cotton or Linen Handerkerchief (invaluable)

He said they were fitting samples. One in white and one in black, if my memory is correct.
