Had anyone tried Weston's special orders?  As I understand it, it's kind of like: you pick the model and choose the leather, the last is not modified and that's all.  Is that true?  How much is it and how long does it take?

I don't know, but there are two retailers in DC that carry Weston that should be able easily to answer your questions. I'd recommend first calling Sky Valet on Wisconsin Ave., as I've discussed getting custom Westons with them in the past. Also perhaps try calling Highcliffe Clothiers on 20th street.

Exactly as you put it. You could also ask for steel toe inserts.
It took 8 weeks on average for mine.

How much more do they charge on top of the regular stock prices? Just curious --- trying to compare price/value for my next purchases.

I put in an order for the Perry Chelsea boot in cognac suede with the understanding that it would be about a 20% premium over regular price. A couple of weeks after ordering, the Weston people contacted my retailer to confirm the price: $1050, or 50% over the list price. I told them to forget it. I wanted the boots, but not at that price. I'm at a loss to explain the premium that they wanted to charge me.
