Western or Cross Pockets?

Hi,

I am a bit confused with the two. While I do know what a western pocket should look like. I told a tailor about having western pockets and doing the appropriate gesture on my own pants, and he said 'Ah, cross pockets.'

Now, is there a difference between the two?

I think, and only I think, judging from picture (drawings, actually), that cross pockets cover more area than a western pocket and stretches almost halfway across the trouser front, ending just an inch and a little from the zip fly.
Is this correct?

Also on western pockets: If the above is not true, than what is the ideal 'starting' position of the pockets? Directly under the belt loop and all the way to the side seams?

Thanks,
WJTW
