I've been looking at the axebreaker boots on the S&S website and was looking for feedback from anyone on here that owns a pair. Did they fit true? It seems like these can be replicated by wesco w. foot tracings to ensure a better fit at a potentially lower price point.

Side note; I never had an interest in engineering boots until I saw the S&S collab with Wesco, but these are out of stock for the time being. But basically their take on the wesco boss boot on a different last/toe. I've had EG Galways in my sights for the last 3 months but could get both of these for that price so it's worth considering.

I'm a size 13D for most american boot brands that I have tried. But with the axebreakers the size/last differs from the stock option in smaller sizes (jumps from 12 to 13.5 on MP). If anyone here has experience with either in a size 12 or bigger, or could point me in the direction of a review of these in bigger sizes I'd greatly appreciate it.

Normally I wouldn't think about it this much, yet here I am losing sleep over it at 3am. FWIW I mostly wear jeans and button down shirts/flannels or just a plain white T. Don't own a bike or a leather jacket...yet.

Engineer boots are my favorite but they will fit unlike the the other two. Also, they go better with jeans/flannels/workwear/moto gear than any of the others.
Galways are the Rolls Royce of boots in that they do the job but are more a luxury shoe. Robust, but nothing like proper work boots such as Wesco.
Your best bet is the Axe Breaker. It's a smart boot that is incredibly made, will last forever (and the rebuilding they offer via mail/dropoff is always available), and will pair with practically everything short of a suit.

Still, I'm partial to engineers. Here's the latest article from StyleForum's journal:

Agreed. I bought some Galways a couple of years ago. Nicest boot I’ve handled but I sold them when I realized I mostly wear jeans and streetwear stuff. Some people wear Galways with jeans and they don’t look bad but they also don’t look quite...right.

Among various other boot and style quests, I'm seriously onto the S&S x Wesco Axe Breakers lately. I've sent Wesco my tracing and measurements and chatted them up (Chris - great guy) about the S&S build. For $100 to Wesco, they'll treat my S&S order as custom. This seems like the right way to go for me. Boot size anxiety is real. I don't do well with it. I'm hard-core loyal to S&S now as they've really been solid over time. I see these Axe Breakers as competitive brothers to Role Club Underdogs. For my long game......I might need both. A short 4-month wait would have Wescos on my feet before the first cold snap of the fall.

I have a pair of the Engineers, they call them Knuckle Draggers. It's a lovely Olive Waxed flesh, I think I have some pictures on my instagram. However, they're very particular fitting boots (engineers in general are), and if you don't know your brannock or comparitive sizing in other engineers or even if you have a high/low instep, they may not fit right. I'd recommend not dropping $700~ dollars on your first pair of engineers if you don't even know if you like how they fit/wear ( for example, there will always be a tiny bit of heel slip in engineers unless you have a high instep or use inserts, and that really irritates some people). Also, you'll need to wear straight leg pants or jeans. I find a 7.5 or greater leg opening a necessity, probably even an 8 for these Wescos.

However, I did just that and I'm fine with them (engineers have always been a bit of a grail for me). For the Knuckle Draggers, I would either go down half a Brannock size or go true-to-size, depending on foot width/toe volume (I find these have less toe volume in them).

Also keep in mind most Wescos come with a leather insert that you can take out if the boot is too tight. I did that with my S&S/Wesco engineers for a few months as I broke them in.

This is delivery week for me and my custom-sized Axe Breakers.

Did you keep your Clinchs??
If so, are you wearing them well??
The Clinches were a little too narrow. Sadly.....I sent them back. That really sucked the life out of me for a few days. The only consolation prize was getting a huge credit card refund.

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
