Any thoughts on whether wellingtons can be worn on wet days without opprobrium? I have a floodzone outside my building in urban New Jersey, and I know I'll need a pair at some point this fall, but I'm wondering what the forum's take on wearing them in town in general is.

In particular, I'm looking at these:

I'm not a native either, but I know this much: if this is your sunrise, you live in a city

I would not.

Love Wellingtons, though. In the country.

So what does everyone suggest for urbanites on rainy days? Rubbers?

I wore my Aigle wellies this morning, but I needed something to throw on while I watered cows.

All the other solutions I've seen are ugly, inconvenient or ugly and inconvenient. Wellingtons combine a little of both, but at least they're deliberate.

Here's an example from a recent thread:

I grouse hunt about 30 days each fall (sometimes in wellies), and am pretty active in various shooting sports. The people that I know who are hard core shooters and country people wouldn't hesitate to don wellies for inclement weather or in muddy conditions regardless of where they were. Now I would think that wearing them in an urban environment might be overkill, but you know your terrain better than I do. Perhaps at least put your trouser legs over them instead of tucking them in, which screams either "look at me" or "this water is a foot deep".

I see a lot of Wellies in the city, actually. I have a simple black pair and, until today, had never questioned the choice in very wet weather. In fact, many people have complimented me on them. I do exchange them for shoes when I get to work though.

I think they're fine, if a little contrived, but better for casual/weekend wear. Also, just get the originals, don't buy the expensive pair. They look more ridiculous and the extra money could be put towards something else, like a good umbrella.
