He died almost 20 yrs ago. In any case,

    George Soros
    Warren Buffet
    Bill Gates
    Jack Welch

    +1 on Richard Posner

Obviously, these guys are not in academia, but they should. We all would have something to gain.

Yea..thats why I put Malcolm Gladwell on the list. Hes not really an academic. Moreso I guess than Bill Gates but he did write a book and he knows a lot so there would be something to gain from him.

As for the list: Its for a project im doing with some people at Yale. I cant really go into it but maybe in the future (I know thats sounds pretty stupid but yea and thanks though)

Pft. Dawkins < Stephen Jay Gould from beyond the grave.

Absolutely (and I've been reading Gould's final work on and off for two years), but GK appeared to want living folk, nonetheless.

Excellent, have you read any of his books (I haven't, but am curious)?

I think he's slightly inaccessible at the moment.

    I'll second both

    Posner
    Coase

    and add

    Stephen Breyer
    Ruth Bader Ginsburg
    George Akerlof
    Robert Reich
    Hal Varian
    Oliver Williamson
    Paul Romer
Alain de Botton (not strictly an "academic" but knowledgable and interesting, I think)

Its hard to know. He was fired for plagiarism, wasnt he?

....and fabricating sources, among other things. The whole "US Army gave smallpox to Indians" urban legend was attributable to him and found completely unproveable. The report from the University about him is lengthy, but incidentally quite informative about Indian Affairs and the (mis)treatment of Native Americans in general.

I'd agree with Posner and add Tim Flannery, John Keegan, Michael Porter, Antonin Scalia, and Al Gore

I'm a pink-blooded, lefty democrat and I would NOT put Al Gore on my list of people to have dinner conversation with. No matter how much he has lightened up since his loss to GWB, he still seems too boring.
