Weird lapel on Dragon's Den

Was watching Dragon's Den (UK) and saw that Peter Jones had an incredibly weird suit lapel (and matching pocket square, but that's beside the point) Pic is from a scan I uploaded.

Can anyone share any light on this lapel? I was wondering if its some sort of way of saying "Look at me, my suit is bespoke."

It is a tab collar. Certinatly nothing new, but it is not seen on "business" suits like this one. You see it a lot on shooting jackets, tweeds and more casual sport coats.

More suited to country clothes. I believe the historical origin is that it's designed so you can close the jacket up right up to the neck if you unfolded the lapels and closed them up. There should be a button underneath the jacket lapel to button the latch of the way when not in use.

Of course, in a city suit like his, it's unneeded. Not to mention odd-looking. Not necessarily a sign that the suit is bespoke though (I have an old M&S donegal jacket with this detail). I think Paul Smith or Jaeger or someone had a RTW range with this detail a while back too.

Looks completely off on a worsted wool suit. You'll find cotton/flannel sport jackets offered by RL and BB from time to time with a tab collar, but never ever on a suit like that. Unlikely it's OTR given it's such an odd detail.

Yep, I noticed this the other week as well, found it really annoying for some reason! Have since seen a Ralph Lauren OTR with the same tab collar so it is available RTW.

cheers

Never mind Peter Jones, what about the shoulder padded monstrous transexual Dynasty monster lady?!

Re the tab collar, I noticed this too and think it looks terrible.

That looks awful. Note to self: never, ever be tempted to try this at home.

so everyone would also agree that the tab looks out of place on this suit as well

I like it on textured sport coats/jackets, but not on a conservative "city" suit.
