I'm going to Stockholm for a long weekend. I'm only taking a keepall but have some how got to be perfectly dressed for:

-Travelling in comfort, looking good when stepping of the plane.
-A meal at a good restaurant.
-A walk in the countryside.
-Brunch and shopping.

Any help with what to pack so I can remain the perfectly dressed gentleman would be most appreciated.

i'm in a similar situation, travelling to london for two nights. bag space is very limited, carry-on only. My plans for the city are probably similar to yours as well.

I'm taking:
A pair of black pebble grained leather shoes with rubber soles. these can be worn with jeans, grey flannels, possibly a jacket and tie in a pinch.

a very nice pair of jeans. these go far more places than the old jeans i would wear around the house, etc. personally, i think it's even more important to wear a nice pair of jeans of a good make while in europe. my favorite brand is rock and republic. just received a pair of dark denim by this designer.

white button down collar shirt. i'm taking a very slim cut version by thom browne, so i can wear it tucked in or untucked, with a jacket or not.

my trusty banana republic multistriped shirt with french cuffs. purples, blues, and i think a little pink in the stripes, women love it and it goes well with just about everything.

navy blazer with plain buttons (no brass buttons). i plan to wear it to dinner, lunch, or shopping depending on the weather and situation. mine is by zegna, a lightweight cloth in a sharp italian cut.

grey flannel trousers, flat fronts. bought these on ebay, made by Polo. a great deal, wear them all the time.

solid navy tie, grenadine knit. goes with either shirt, with or without the jacket, and would even go with the jeans if i want to wear it for a mod-urban look.

cool blue t-shirt with design. can be worn under the unbuttoned white shirt, layered with the banana republic shirt and a blazer/ jeans, etc. my favorites are from juicy couture for men or any of the many t-shirts on www.urbanoutfitters.com

Tough, but common problem.

Compromises are necessary I think:

Worn (for the flight) - smart pair of jeans, OCBD or similar, odd jacket in subdued pattern, 3/4 length casual coat, smart pair of ankle boots.

And in the bag:
for the restaurant - any decent shirt, complementing tie and trousers. Shoes you can used your ankle boots; jacket, same as worn on the flight (hence the need for a fairly subdued pattern).
for the walk - sweater of choice plus another OCBD. Wear with the coat, jeans and your choice of shoes (you make want to pack a decent pair of walking boots rather than using the ankle boots). You might want to think about a scarf and gloves, depending on the climate.
Brunch & Shopping - mix of the above to your taste

Essentially this means all that needs to be packed in the bag are: 2 shirts (one dress, one OCBD), sweater, a tie, smart trousers, (plus hiking boots, gloves and scarf if needed) and of course socks/underwear/toiletries. Very manageable. Everything else you need you're wearing on the plane. Not much variety, of course, but for a weekend, you'll survive and it's much better than needing to check in a bag.

1) condoms
2) blue pills (if you need them)
3) fake business cards to impress the ladies (they don't need to know your real name)
4) somewhere to hide your wedding ring.

I would like to recommend a long sleeve silk knit polo sweater like that offered by Paul Fredrick. I think this type of sweater is very good as a casual dressy weekend item if in a solid color that isn't too bright.

I think it is fairly cold in Stockholm at the moment so i'm thinking of packing a roll neck instead of one of the shirts.

I've found a good brand that apparently was used in the recent James Bond Casino Royale film worn by Daniel Craig.

hmmm....that doesn't look right. i am positive Sunspel made the polo shirt for Bond, but john smedley made all of the knitwear used in the film:

James Bond wears John Smedley in Casino Royale (November 14th 2006)
Daniel Craig, the new James Bond, can be seen wearing styles Belmont (V neck sweater in Black) and Richards (Roll Collar sweater in Black) in the latest Bond blockbuster, Casino Royale. Both styles are available in our To Your Wardrobe collection or in the Mens Merino section.

good idea on the sweater. i don't think i will have room for one, unless i wear it on the plane. did you find some suitable jeans for your stockholm trip?

How much room do you have for this, a standard carry-on? That's more than enough.

RLPL dark solid navy single breasted notch lapel suit with flat front pants
Charvet french blue barrel cuff spread collar dress shirt
Charvet tie, varying shades of purple/pink
Antiqued dark brown Santoni FAM derbys

RLPL Medium grey worsted wool trousers
Band of Outsiders navy overdyed oxford dress shirt

Worn off the plane:

Seraphin 3/4 shearling car coat
Malo medium grey v-neck cashmere sweater
Band of Outsiders white with black yarn stripe box-pleat OCBD
RRL slim fit straight leg jeans
C&J for RL chelsea boots

No haven't found any suitable jeans yet. I have found it very hard to find simple smart jeans that I can wear with a sports jacket / Blazer especially as i'm a 31" waist, and seem to fit a medium rise the best.

Have you any suggestions for good quality smart jeans without all the bleaching, ripping, nipping and other distressing?

So far i've been recomended APC, Rag & Bone & 5 EP but haven't found them for sale anywhere.

APC, Rag & Bone, 5EP, Studio D' Artisan, RRL, Nudie (some models, like Even Steven w/o contrast stitching, which you will find in Stockholm aplenty), Acne, there are plenty of others.

Good suggestion, thanks! I think John Smedley do a polo sweater also.

Thanks! I've just had a look at the Ralph Lauren Jeans and like them a lot. I've also heard that Levi's have started to make a 501 medium rise with subtle detailing?
