I'm finishing up the process of having a suit made by Vestrucci for my wedding. The suit is in dark blue, a 80/20 mohair blend from H&S.

I'm slim (5'8, 130) and tend to find off-the-rack ties to be too wide. However, I'm aware that the tie should be proportionate to the suit lapel, and Vestrucci makes rather wide lapels. (Not sure the exact width on mine, but the permanentstyle guy measured the ones on his suit from Vestrucci at 4".)

I was looking at a few ties from Cappelli:

I was planning to go with a 7cm width (2.75") for the first two and 8cm for the second one, but now wondering if these will be too disproportionately slim.

Any advice on width, and on the tie in general? I like these darker blue ones with texture or small patterns. I have dark blue eyes and dark coloring... but I'm also thinking I don't want it to be too somber for an outdoor, summer ceremony.

Thanks for any advice.

I don’t think those lapels are freakishly wide. A standard 3.5” width will look just fine.

If you choose a tie width based on your suit jacket's lapels, then it will look balanced. I don't know the width of your jacket lapels, but if it's 4", then a 2.75" tie might look odd. Conversely, if you have a very narrow suit jacket lapel, then a 3.75" width tie will look strange.

Your photo does not make you look like your build is narrow even though your weight is low. Those moderate width lapels do not fill the chest to edge of coat shoulders and look at all out of proportion. I agree with the other opinions offered. I think a narrow tie would look odd and like you found it in the boy's dept instead of a menswear store. I may be an outcast but when I see a panel of suited men on a news show or a sports broadcast the narrow lapel-narrow tie guy looks frail compared to the men wearing the moderate width lapels and ties. The Mad Men thing has had it 15 minutes....

2.75” will look narrow on that suit. I’d suggest at least 8 cm but my preference would be 8.5-9 cm/3.25-3.5”.
