Wedding Suit for Groom Question

So one of my best friends is getting married next year and I'm the best man. We were talking about suit ideas (he doesnt want to wear a tux)...is it distasteful to wear a pinstripe suit? I'm not talking a conservative banker's suit, but something more flashy...dark base with really bright bold stripes. Her dress won't be a typical dress either (dont know exactly what it will be tho)

the front page of Duncan Quinn is a perfect example of such a suit....

That the pinstripes aren't parallel at the bottom of that Duncan Quinn jacket is certainly distasteful.

Most pinstripe fabrics say "business," so I'd look at other options. That said, lime green pinstripes don't exactly say "business," and it might work to go for some unconventional colors. But your friend may face the problem of garishness.

If they want to be untraditional, he should probably find out what she's wearing first, so he can complement her.

I think her dress is going to be white-base with maybe some lightly colored flowers (pale pinks, teals etc). Not a traditional wedding dress cut, more of a vintage hawaiian style cut, but made longer down to the floor. If he goes pinstripe, it's definitely not going to be business-appropriate (a la the DQ link)...with something like the lime-green, or pink bold stripes (think Etro). I guess the question isnt whether such suit will look good/bad, but the tastefullness level of it, in context within its own flashiness.

If you saw a guy like on the DQ front page, with his bride described above....would you think "ugh, he shouldnt have worn that suit to his wedding"?

Completely depends. My concern would be that the DQ suit has the potential to veer into camp or at least excessive flashiness (although it also could look very good - it's a question of context and presentation). Assuming some basic adherence to traditional values, the center of attention should be her dress, not his suit. If they made a collective decision to wear loud, flashy, or campy clothes such that his outfit was "consistent" with hers, that would be one thing. But it sounds like her dress, while not a traditional wedding dress, will be far from loud or flashy. Accordingly, I'd say your friend probably should eschew the stripes and go with something more understated.

ok good points! I think we'll suggest a solid color (grayish blue or something of the sorts) in a more modern fitted cut.

Think about how he'll look and react when going over the wedding pictures in 25 years. I have friends and relatives gaffawing over their Barry Manilow wedding tuxes from the 70's.

But isn't that part of the charm of old pictures? "Geez, dad, you looked like a total dork! I can't believe Mom let you out of the house wearing that."

To bring the thread back to where it should be surely the Groom can have considerable freedom with what HE (and his bride) want rather than ppure convention.

True that you would be able to look back in amusement at the Kaftan you chose (!) but rules cannot be stipulated generally for so personal an occasion

never really noticed that but yer right....guess they should have dipped his hands in some foundation

the wedding isnt til next April so we'll see what his bride's dress will actually look like then determine his getup, pinstripes or not.
