I'm heading to a wedding in a week. The invitation doesn't specify formal or casual, but it starts at 3pm which suggests that its not too formal. In either case, below is a picture of what I am thinking about wearing:

I'm a pretty casual guy, not really into suits, but after this wedding I think I will invest in a navy or grey suit so that I don't have to worry about these last minute things.

What do you guys think about the current outfit choice? is it salvageable?

Trovata Navy cotton blazer
J.Crew grey/white tailored fit shirt
J.Crew essential chino pants
I will wear a tie, not sure what color or style (any ideas?)
I am also thinking about a pair of brown leather oxford shoes.

sorry about the crappy pics.

You can and should do better than chinos. That 'coat' is no good either - the buttons are awful at the least.

Tue certainly - decent suit would be ideal and given that I doubt that the invitation turned up last week, you should have bought one by now.

It is not a good idea to seek support for something inappropriate on the internet.

Depends whose standards you want to go with. By the standards of normal people, it looks like you're young enough to get away with it. It isn't your day to be watched, and you won't be so garish that you'll be stealing the spotlight.

By Styleforum standards, you look ridiculous. However, seeing as this is your first post, I'm not going to tell you to burn your wardrobe and start rebuilding... yet. So, this is how to work with what you've got:

First off, you MUST keep those ridiculous white pocket buttons hidden, keep them in the pocket! Next off, you must leave the bottom button of your jacket unbuttoned. Brown shoes would look fine with that outfit. If I were picking a tie for that outfit, I'd either go with a matte brown or green. Fit is passable, but not particularly good. Jacket is too short- there look to be other issues too, but the distortion from the bottom button being buttoned, poor photo quality, and my own lack of certainty keep me from critiquing further.

When you get home, burn your wardrobe.

Welcome to Styleforum.

The start time for the event in no way indicates the formality of the event. If a dress code wasn't stated in the invite, then you should phone the happy couple and ask how formal a dress code they are expecting. How old are they? How old are you? Is it outdoor or indoor? Will you be changing for the evening?

Your blue blazer and chinos is the most informal outfit you could do. But as Fishy says, hide those pocket buttons, and don't do up the bottom button. I'd even consider replacing the white buttons with brown.

Thanks for the comments.

The bride and groom are in their late 30s. The wedding will be outside.

I'm a 26 year old PhD student. My daily style is pretty casual: basic t-shirts, uniqlo/everlane oxford button downs, apc new standards, chinos, clarks desert boots, red wings classic mocs, rachel comey oxfords, etc. The last time I needed a suit was 10 years ago for a funeral, which I borrowed from a friend. Because wearing a suit hasn't become a commonplace thing for me (yet) I never felt compelled to invest in one--until now, that is.

Anyway, I'm grateful for your feedback; it prompted me to go out and look for a quick-fix suit. I took advantage of the labor day sales and bought a basic black suit from Express. It's called "the photographer's suit," I paid roughly $250.00 for it. It's not great, but for this last minute pinch I think it will work, and I think it's definitely better than the above option. I'll probably give it to my younger brother and invest in a real suit in the coming year.

Below are some pics, still need to get a tie.

Don't give it to your brother. Keep it and wear it for evening occasions. Go back out and get a blue suit for daytime occasions. Like weddings.

Edit: and get the trousers hemmed as suggested.
