Hi guys. I am in dire need of some sartorial assistance. I am currently unemployed and buying new clothes isn't anywhere near my list of priorities. I used to own two suits (tropical black wool and a summer cotton khaki) that are mere jackets now...the dry-cleaner destroyed the pants.. I have a wedding to attend on 9/13 and I am at a complete loss what to wear and how to combine what I own. I rarely wear suits and strangely enough, have attended very few weddings or ocassions were suits were de riguer. Would a black shirt, black jacket and a grey slacks look too "fall" for an 11:30 am wedding? How "acceptable" is wearing black pants (different shade and fabric) with my black jacket? Black jacket, b&w gingham shirt and gray pants? help..

The balck jacket and grey pants would probably work together. A lot of these things depend on the cut and texture of the pieces, and it is difficult to say unequivocally whether something would or would not work without actually seeing the individual components. A black and white gingham shirt with a black jacket and gray pants seems like a little too much and not enough at the same time - if you are not going to be wearing a suit, it's probably better to mismatch the colors on all the pieces for a more casual look. How about a white and blue checked shirt of some kind? If you have a white shirt and a silver or beige tie, that might be another option.

Tell us what shirts and pants you have, and see if we can't give you some better ideas.

Thank you... I really appreciate this LA Guy.

Shirts...white, gray, black, pink (2 shades), mint green, blue green, many shades of solid blue, lotsa checks and small plaids which I am sure won't fly.

    Pants....gray and black only.

I tried wearing the black jacket and one pr of my 4 or so black pants and they're a little off shade wise. Would I be committing a sartorial sin if I wore them as a set? If it was an evening wedding, I could probably pull it off but as it's an 11:30 am, under the unforgiving glare of the noonday sun, I am not sure. Whaddaya think?

Ties, I can probably borrow one from my friends....shirts or suits are another matter.

    Thank you..

you need to wear a solid white shirt for anything remotely formal. also, your tie should be either solid black or silver. i chose silver to go with your pants, otherwise your top half will look like a typical black suit/white shirt/black tie combination. try both colors of ties and see which you prefer. remember, it's difficult to be overdressed for a wedding, but very easy to be underdressed.

Great advice....thank you very much.. I don't own a silver tie but I know someone who has one.

How about a white pocket square? Would that be too much?
