Wedding Attire: Should the groom and groomsmen match?

I will be wearing a morning coat for my wedding and I'm not sure if it is a lot to ask for my groomsmen to do the same. I am inclined to ask them to wear tuxedos. Would it look bad for me to be in a morning coat and them to be in tuxedos?

It would look weird. One is morning wear, the other evening.

What time of day is your wedding?

No matching. And no tuxedos anyway.

EDIT: no matching = none of that horrible 'tradition' of people wearing the very same suit/tie/whatnot.

the wedding is at 11 at a beautiful church in Philadelphia. I was going to have them all dress in traditional tuxedos of their own choice, but I'm afraid that the clash between morning and evening would matter.

I would say to them that they can decide between themselves, that they may wear morning dress or may simply wear smart business suits with a few embellishments (buttonholes and whatnot0. Have them all decide, so that if they want to wear morning they all wear morning, and if they want to wear lounge they all wear lounge. But definitely don't have them wearing semi-formal evening dress.

A lounge suit is a non-formal suit. A 'regular' suit, if you will.

Yes it would look weird, if your going with a morning coat then you should all wear them or all wear tuxes but not both. Also you want the accenting colors to differ from what you wear and what your groomsmen wear. They should all have one specific color and you another.

I think they would have to all be wearing morning wear. The ties can be different of course.

If this is too much trouble, perhaps matching mid-gray suits with the same color of shirt and similar tie?

Somebody please dig up Manton's old LL post on wedding attire.

Dressy lounge suits characteristics especially suitable for a wedding (excuse terrible pun): one button, peak lapel; three pieces (perhaps even with a double-breasted vest); no trouser cuffs (this is essential); double breasted; grey rather than navy (but this isn't set in stone).

Tuxedo = evening dress, morning does not = evening. You should wear formal day dress of whatever description you like. If they have their own morning dress it would be churlish to ask them to hire to match yours.

Here it is from AAAC http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/T...DINGATTIRE.htm Unfortunately I think some of the images are missing. I can't find it on the London Lounge as I'm not a member there and the search function seems to be limited to members. Mediocrecomposer, I couldn't find this link when I emailed you yesterday. Edit: here is the LL link. I think the same images are missing: http://www.thelondonlounge.net/forum...hp?f=36&t=6562 Also check out this section from the "Black Tie Guide". Clearly a mis-nomer in this cases as it deals with morning dress. http://www.blacktieguide.com/Supplem...ning_Dress.htm

Or the groom could wear a full cutaway and the groomsmen could wear strollers.
