Chicks really dig that. Also, the comment about Dorian's in NYC- that place blows. If you're using that as your style benchmark, it means you shop exclusively at abercrombie and vineyard vines, and perhaps delve into the Polo stuff that no one in his right mind would buy.

Jeans with a tie look fine as long as it's paired with a coat and/or sweater. Without one/both of those it can indeed look ridiculous.
