Wearing french cuff shirt with sweater

I have to think so. When I've worn FC with a sweater (once, maybe?) I omitted the links and wrapped the cuff around my wrist to slim it down.

That's what barrel cuffs are for!

I like for my sweater cuffs to fit fairly closely, and it seems like a french cuff shirt would push them out awkwardly.

Yes, I realised this recently only after getting French cuffs on all my shirts

I'll have to get some more barrel-cuff shirts sometime, but if I do up the cuffs barrel-style but with cuff-links I don't think most people would notice. I advise silk-knots for this as having one side of a metal cuff-link digging into your wrist is not comfortable...

Ditto the above. Go with silk knots regardless, to knock the level of formality down, or do up the cuffs barrel style. I have some plastic fake MOP "button" links, and if the cuffs were done up barrel style with those, no one would notice.

It looks pretty silly.

Maybe cut the sweater down so that the sleeves end before the cuffs and tell everyone its a Thom Brown sweater.

I actually do this quite regularly. I just let the sleeves of the sweater bunch up a tiny bit so that the sweater cuff ends above the shirt cuff. Of course, I only do this when I'm wearing a jacket overtop. If you're not wearing a jacket, maybe consider a sweater vest instead of a full sweater?

I too wear french cuffs under sweater quite a lot. I only wear silk knots in them. Typically I do this with a fine merino sweater which has a "town" look - it would probably make less sense with a heavy sweater, which is more "country". I don't think it has to be under a jacket - I often take the jacket off when I'm at work.

Almost all my shirts are FC because I like them. I therefore have to press my FC shirts into sweater duty quite often. I find that a trim, new sweater with reasonably tight cuffs is more than enough to hold an FC together in reasonable enough fashion. I just arrange the shirt cuff in barrell-cuff fashion and by manipulating things a bit once the sweater is on you can achieve a perfectly normal look without any buttons or links at all. I prefer to do it this way because when dressed in just a sweater and shirt for business casual, I can push the combined shirt/sweater cuff up a bit and achieve a sleeves-rolled-up look that I like.

it's funny to find this post. I only recently started wearing french cuffs and i had a RL sweater on last night and decided to take out my cufflinks

i'll be annoyed if i lose them though, theyre nice one

Funny you should mention it -- a week or so ago I tried it with a very thin Merino v-neck and throughout the evening experimented with exposing a bit of cuff and the links. I rather liked the look. No one called me a marsupial.

With a heavier sweater maybe wrapping w/o links, as others have suggested, is the way to go. I plan to fool around with it some more and see what happens.

It seems to me that with many items of fashion or looks, it's more how you carry yourself - if you feel uncomfortable it'll show and you won't be able to pull it off.

I do the same thing, sometimes with cufflinks, sometimes without. It can look perfectly fine, IMO.

i do it all the time, as long as i'm wearing a jacket i fold the sweater cuff back.
