Wearing a bowtie without a jacket - sloppy or acceptable?

I would not do it unless I was tending bar.

Wearing a bow tie without a jacket would be the same as wearing a FIH tie without a jacket - fine if one is walking around one's office without wearing one's jacket, not so smart if one is walking around outside - either look will make one appear like low-end retail help.

For reasons I can't altogether articulate, I like it better than wearing a regular necktie without a jacket. It just seems more neat--still I can't shake the feeling that unless it's worn with a sweater (or, as others have said, while tending bar), it's a little "off."

I guess "sloppy" is not the right word for the poll. I think "casual" would be more appropriate.

I my neighborhood (Northern Liberties, Philadelphia), the hipsters rule and they may often be found wearing skinny jeans, a bow tie, and riding a bike. It is a very casual look, but it is still put together and I far prefer it to the South Philly (guido) look.

I wear mine without a jacket, but usually have a sweater on. Very rarely I will wear one without either the jacket or sweater. It can look OK without either on. The most important is to look comfortable in the tie.

I usually wear a jacket with mine, but take off the jacket when I'm at my desk. Out and about, I wouldn't do it. At home or in my office, guilty.

Interesting observation. Perhaps a smaller or less flashy bow tie would be fine?

I think we need pics to back up said looks. I can't picture a bowtie without a jacket that would look "together"

It's the same here in London. The bow tie seems to have been appropriated by the East London hipster crowd.
