nephew,
what is your experience with rl shell in regard to the number of wearings before you would need to apply venetian cream. it is interesting because I assumed that all shell comes from horween

Uncle, the shell indeed comes from Horween and it is great quality. However, the final finishing that C&J (who makes these shoes for RL) does is not as good as Alden's finish. I don't have the shoes anymore (due to fit issues), but I remember having to apply venetian cream every 6-7 wearings or so to get and maintain that deep, classic shell cordovan shine. The shells somehow appear too dry without this treatment, and your method (that works so well for Alden and AE shell) alone is not sufficient in my opinion.

exactly this. Also, ive had pairs that retain a beautiful, glassy appearance with minimal upkeep while others seemingly need an application of Reno before every wear. The worst is when the two shoes in a pair look different for one reason or another: different colored shells, one shoe is "dry" while the other looks "glassy", or even worse one of the shoes lightens up one or two shades while the other remains the same
