Nice bunch. I love Murl's flanel suit, and @EFV sure knows how to wear a hat.

Thank you. I really love that suit. It feels like wearing pajamas. It's also fairly lightweight and I can easily wear it year round where I live. Looks like your grenadine fit took the top prize...well deserved.

It was not an accident. That fit doesn't contribute anything to this thread and is not in the spirit* of it (as you are well aware)

*an objective selection criterion of quality CM fits, with thumbs being given for contributions to CM rather than Father's Day benedictions. It isn't the first time I've ignored a 20 thumb post/fit when I felt that the spirit wasn't met. I've made exceptions when I felt they were worthwhile...your fourth child for instance...but birth of child > Father's Day

(sorry to get all serious bidness)

well, to reply to that, i will say that i was immensely pleased that that fit got 20 thumbs, and i dont think that it had that much to do with fathers day. i think it was legit a superbly executed fit.

ill grant you that it was not exactly a very MC look, but i think that wearing khakis and a polo shirt is almost the anti-SF, and it is a look that can so easily end up either as super douchey or very slouchy and gross and lazy. i think, if i may say so, that i was able to put together a collection of very very well fitting, tasteful, and nicely combined, selection of pieces to make that look really good. and i think that there is what to be learned from that.

i know i just tooted the crap out of my own horn, but we all know im a narcissist already.

haha! i had no idea that the scooter fit was a 20 thumber. awesome. thanks for including it.

If it wasn't you that posted it, it would have gotten 3-4 thumbs tops. Now I know personality is always a factor. We know that if someone rolled up in a labelking fit, they'd get half the thumbs he gets (though perhaps this isn't true. That French guy did rather well for himself). There are a number of fits where I get 20-25 that, if someone else had posted, probably would have gotten 10-15. So it goes. But I think the disparity in this case is rather large. No matter how nicely the colors go together and the clothes fit (nicely in both cases), the vast majority of those thumbs are for Stitchy wishing everyone Father's Day. Seriously. Imagine if some absolutely random poster, joined two years ago, 300 odd posts, posted that. Do you really think it would even break 8? As I think FlyingMonkey said, you could post yourself in a man thong and break 20.

If yes, then we gotta agree to disagree. If no, well, then, there you go.

(And fair is fair, had that fit where I just wore a green t-shirt and jeans somehow gotten 20....I think in the end it had 15 or so...I wouldn't have included it for the same reasons.)

Regardless, we should move on. And celebrate the awesomeness of that Scooter picture.

    ------

On a related note, I would love if there was someway to entirely decontextualize fits. Remove them from the poster, from the background, etc. I realize that relying on thumbs is antithetical to this. So it goes.

I'm imagining, in my make believe forum world, the WAYWRN with some sort of software so that to upload a picture, no text can be typed in that particular post. And where the individual pictures are labelled anonymously, so that nobody know what pictures ever go with what screen name. Nobody would know that it is Claghorn who always stands in behind a door frame or Stitchy in front of his house. Our fits would be entirely removed from our personalities/reputation/etc.

Obvious issues with this, chiefly that posters' ability to not dress terribly lends them credibility elsewhere. But in terms of pure WAYWRN, I'd say that would be an improvement in terms of assessing fits. Though perhaps not in terms of fun.

    -----

I totally failed to move on. But at least shifted into a more generalized discussion.

I don't mind the whole online persona aspect of this kind of thing. Why post and critique fits, if not to develop a sense of style? And style is more about personality than about clothing. Clothes are a medium.

Yeah, it's not black or white for me. And let's face it, WAYWRN without personality would ultimately just suck.

in regards to the first part of your post, hard to say, i have no idea why people "liked" that fit, they did not tell me. perhaps you are right. i would like to believe i am right. its probably a bit of both. i mean, i did crush a dad fit, no easy task, but yeah, a rando would likely not have hit 20 for that. sucks for them!

i think if someone posted a labelking fit, and i dont mean a crazy collection of items, i mean if they actually put together a proper LK fit, they would get lots of love. as much as LK would get posting it himself? doubtful, but that leads right into the second portion of your post.

yes, thumbs and appreciation are inextricably tied to the people who post the fit, and their persona. it might be the vast improvements they have made over time, it may be that they are well liked, or in the case of lack of thumbs it may be that they have been a dick in general and people do not want to give them thumbs. it may be because they posted a happy fathers day greeting, who knows really.

but, while i think that in your academic world, it would be nice to remove the face and the UN and avatar and surroundings and just judge the fit on its own merits, in my world, i like that people get thumbs for more than just the fit in a vacuum. is that antithetical to the concept of this thread? perhaps. but im cool with it. and like you said, WAYWRN would suck without the personalty.

also, y u mad that your tee shirt fit did not get 20 thumbs? :im-an-asshole:

but yes, lets celebrate, or cerebrate, the scoot!

Personally, I'd suggest we keep the 20 thumbs threshold as the sole, impartial selection criterion (as Clags did himself initially, I believe). And leave it up to the SFers to interpret the posts here as they see fit (sorry for the pun). For if we decide not to include Stitchy's casual fit, then why include the one with mini-Stitch? Or in the last bunch, Roycru's pic from 1965? Awesome as it is, it's hardly compliant with the WAYWRN thread title. But I'm glad it's in here now, cool to see how someone has maintained a consitent style over half a century!

I think it's safe to say any grown man who takes pictures of himself posing in fancy clothes, and then posts those pics online for other grown man to ogle over is exhibiting at least a wee bit of narcissistic tendencies. You're just a little more obvious about it, stitchmeister ( )

Thumb ups are definitely affected by:
    - User
    - User's reputation
    - How many thumb ups they already have
    - Other users' comments

I just wonder if there is a total neutral way of judging a fit. I cannot think of one.

Anonymous post, fit places on a dummy. Though that really just gives us the combination of the clothing, not necessarily how well they fit.
