One of the things that surprises and pleases me is how many SF-ers have facial hair. I'm at the point where growing a beard adds a good 10 years to my face (which doesn't stop me from shaving once a week unless I have a meeting of some sort), but the second I hit 40, the shaving implements get shelved.

When my SO went to Shanghai on a business trip and left me alone in Hong Kong for two weeks I stopped giving a shit in the morning and instead of the usual clean shaving ritual I switched to just trimming down to 3mm length. The effects this had on my Chinese work colleagues and underlings was shear sheer amazing. Not only did I look like Ryan Gosling's down syndrome diagnosed twin brother, but people three times my age, not capable of growing anything reminiscent of facial hair, started to fear my presence and respect my authoritaé...

So at least if you work in an Asian country adding twenty years is not always a bad thing. [IMG]

It's actually the sense of self to know that we have a brain that lets us understand that others, just as I do, will have equally strong but different tastes. We then use this brain. But I like your comments.

    I wish I could grow a beard... I cannot.

People just ask me why I don't shave. Perhaps I lack your facial gravitas. I will say that one of my Korean coworkers is able to grow a full beard, did so (keeping it neatly trimmed), and was promoted shortly thereafter. He's also a borderline genius, so that might have something to do with that. But I'm going to chalk it up to the beard.

Sorry, Butch, I agree: Your facial hair is way too long, at least! :(

Sounds like you're talking less about a sense of 'self' and more about a sense of commercially-derived conformity - yes, we can trace the fall and rise of facial hair on the modern era to market-generated fashion trends.

Recent pics - the camera is too low so the quarters on the jacket and jacket proportions look off - I must get a proper tripod!

The jeans are just wrong in this context.
