    Interesting. I think my old Baracuta had something like that but I never thought to use it.

    I don't think we're disagreeing much here. To extend my thought, something like Carhartt fabric (which may be a type of denim weave for all I know) seems more durable and protective than plain old jeans. In any case, though, I've done lots of physical labor in jeans, and I don't mean to denigrate this staple of Americana.

    Citan I think the calf-and-denim thing really depends on the rest of the items worn. I think your gut instinct is more likely to lead to a coherent look than a more liberal approach, but I don't think it's as categorical as you make it out to be.

    Carhartt uses duck fabric which is two wefts over/under single warps (2/1) with no offset (with an offset it would be a 2/1 twill).

    It'd still be a 2/1 twill unless they're just using the same shuttle with two weft threads, the pattern would just run along the fabric instead of across it, with virtually no difference.
