The sentence means: They could be tapered slightly, I suppose, but they needn't be. I am in the UK ATM. I can appreciate the taper comment--even if I disagree--but the subjective opinion about chinos over shorts is a subjective opinion about chinos over shorts. Why not come out and say: 'I don't like shorts'? I think the rolled chino look can be used well, but I prefer, to avoid it myself.

I think you're missing the point: The rival of each is blue and gold/maize.

We're talking (typing) about clothes, so just about everything is subjective innit? But in the interests of full disclosure ...

I posted recently in another thread which was asking what shoes to wear with shorts. Every Sunday from April to October all over America you will see middle aged white blokes in the diner with skinny legs protruding from baggy chino shorts, sockless and wearing either penny loafers or topsiders to accentuate their chicken legs and sparrow ankles. It's not a good look to start with IMO, but made worse by the sheer ubiquity of it. Your pic wasn't this bad of course, but was edging dangerously close to that general theme.

I wear shorts occasionally/rarely but never sockless unless I'm at the beach or pool. I have a couple of pairs of slim chinos shorts which I took to the seamstress to get narrowed to avoid the Morecombe and Wise look. I will wear short socks and Stan Smiths or suede Gazelles with them. I do this less frequently these days as I think it just looks more dignified wearing long trousers in almost every situation. I also don't buy the myth that long trousers are just SOOO hot, (especially in the UK). In Houston it will be over 90 F and over 90% humidity for at least six months a year, but with some lightweight chinos, linens, white 501s etc. the summer can be navigated painlessly and with dignity.

Belt tie and trousers do not work. Maybe try white trousers next time, black belt, black shoes. Tie looks strange, top two buttons open - no tie.

You wear socks with shorts? :puzzled: I can understand with trainers, when running, but with loafers?

I don't mean, to be unduly dismissive of your point, but you're trying to compare oranges with apples without objective thinking. Like I said, cut has something, to do with critical thought, but your style points are roundabout.

Your shorts could be slimmed several inches. Anyway, here's some more subjective opinion: you look bad.

Your proportions just look so weird. I know it's not your fault, but there has to be a way to dress and minimize how tall and skinny you are.

Says someone who wears this shirt.

Look, they could afford to loose 1 1/2 max; seeing as too many in SF wear their trousers too tight, I would say the shorts are more than adequate.

His shirt has nothing to do with the fact that your shorts are too wide and make you look like an American tourist. However, shorts are tricky and cannot be made too tight. So, I prefer not to wear them at all.

Hey, man, I have no dog in either hunt. As long as no Aggies are involved, it's all good. :slayer: (repurposed for this context)

    Say what now?
