Ways You're NOT Fashionable and Items You'll NEVER Wear

While I think of myself as having a "white collar" mind, I've always had a sort of "blue collar" style sensibility, although I joined this forum for some moral support and guidance as I try to get more fashionable.

But basically, until now, I've been satisfied with CLEAN, BASIC clothing!

The exceptions are shoes, wallet, belt, watch and nice cardigan sweaters with V neck! Those are my special areas of interest. Still, I can't justify much more than $400 for dress shoes, $125 for wallet, $60 for belt or $75 for sweater.

Otherwise, I haven't minded jeans and work pants. For years I have loved the color variety and iron durability of work pants from Ben Davis Company in California, but I'm not sure if they're still around and still good. I do want to upgrade to dressier slacks, but the material must be good- I have a tendency to chafe pants in the crotch area if the material is cheesy. I'm overweight but thinning, and think I can now get into size 48, hopefully 46 soon, so that may open up more possibilities. I'd always like to hear about dressy trousers priced below $75 that you've found are stylish yet durable and practical- can be washed as "normal load" in the washing machine!

Likewise my shirts have been casual and likewise I'm interested in better shirts.

OK, maybe this is personal, but I don't like sleeping in pajamas or a "nightshirt." To me a nightshirt just seems too close to a lady's nightgown and besides I have this image of going down a dark shadowy hallway in a nightshirt with a night cap and a candle and looking like a ghost in a British castle!

For me, underwear in bed is fine. And whether night or day, since it IS "under"wear I just want clean and comfortable, nothing fancy. Standard Fruit of the Loom and Hanes are fine! I did think BVD was a cut above them in quality but I think this brand is defunct???

Sometimes I wear bifocal glasses and I like a reasonably attractive frame. Lately my vision's been equally good or bad without them so I find I prefer abandoning them, even if gents in glasses (the right ones) seem to automatically gain 50 IQ points by donning them!

As to accessories I WON'T wear, the list is topped off by men's earrings. To me "men's earrings" is an oxymoron, and whatever statement it makes, is not for me.

I do have a tendency to have most pairs of pants "slip" below my waist, which is a nuisance. But I eschew the use of suspenders! I'm not seeking the Farmer Brown or Dan Rather look, personally!

I would someday consider ties, fancy hankies in a pocket (but I'd have to wear a suit first) and cufflinks, but thus far I've avoided them. But I did buy my first sports coat recently. Progress!

So...I may be more Oscar Madison than Felix Unger and just got myself booted out of the forum, but I'm both honest and aspiring to somewhat refine my image without getting "stuffy."

The ball's in your court. Where are YOUR fashion rough edges or taboos?

Living, learning,
Jerry

Being 18 and addicted to C&J, Paul Stuart, tweeds, J. Press, Corneliani, Hickey Freeman, Polo RL, Brooks Bros., etc. pretty much make me nowhere near "fashionable" among my age bracket.

You must recognize the oxymoron that is "washable dress pants"

Just a question of anatomy. Some have thighs that are big enough, muscley or chubby, that the tops rub each other a bit. If you're built like that, material in between is going to rub against the other leg as you walk.

It's enough of a problem for runners that chafing on the thighs is a regular topic of discussion with its own traditional remedies.

Yes, Mendel has described it! Of course, my chafing comes from muscle!

My big one is that I wont buy jeans with holes or rips or other extreme types of damage on them. The most I'll go is a little fading.
I wont wear trucker hats. I wont flip my collar up, except on outwear, and then its usually to keep warm. I don't to wear gold, I don't even like the look of gold buttons on blazers.

This is the culture I grew up in too. I too was brain washed into thinking it was 'cool' if you got away with wearing jeans when dressing properly was required. The problem is that EVERYBODY does this now. Everywhere everyone turns up dressed in the same ubiquitous jeans and t-shirt worn like a Mao suit. The real rebellion is against the mass slob culture we live in. I now go against the grain by turning up as well dressed as I can possibly get away with rather than turning up as slobbishly dressed as I can get away with.

Viva la revolucion!

What's a "casino royal(e)" suit & tie?

Wearing jeans doesnt automatically equate to looking slobbish. Many a great stylish and well-sussed outfit can consist of jeans in the mix, and dare I say, can look better (in the sense of fit, style, overall aesthetic within its appropriate context) than your typical guy wearing a suit/tie.
