Watch Winders - Are they good for watches?

Thinking about picking one up - what is the general consensus on these things? Also should the watch winder be turning constantly or in intervals? Thanks!

I dont know frankly. Few of my watches are automatic anyway, but I would imagine if it is set to do it in intervals it should not be a problem. I am sure some chaps here have one of those things though and can chime in.
Personally I wouldn't bother with one.

I think most users recommend interval.

The watch needs to unwind to ... So it depends on the watches power reserve.

imho

Get a watch winder (like Orbita) that winds a certain amount. Most Orbita's can be adjusted different settings and accordingly to each watch specification, ie: number of winds per day.

I highly recommend Orbita. Price is high, but the engineering is great, and the pieces are very attractive.

I use interval windings.

My watches are fairly high end, and I have not had any problems.

I think they are a novelty. I own 3 automatics and I don't see fit for a winder.

I don't think it's a novelty but more of a convenience to some. I hate adjusting the time on my automatic watches everytime I want to wear them since I don't really wear them everyday. It's also a risk of breaking it, I've seen my friends snap the crown on their Rolex while adjusting the time. Maybe it's their fault for being too aggresive but a winder would have definitely prevented it.

I have 1/2 a dozen individual winders for my automatics. Everytime I buy a new watch I buy a winder also. I think they are very practical, who wants to set a watch every morning??

I consider it part of the charm of having these little machines. Go to the watch draw in the morning, pick a watch, set the time and wind it (or wave my arm around maniacally for a few moments).

Ditto.

I need to find a nice box/case.

Right now everything is in their original box and I don't like the way they set in my drawer.
