I just recently got a watch from eBay that needs a new battery. I was quoted localy that this service will cost me $28.00+ dollars, so I figured that I can do it myself, I just need a Watch Spanner. But the thing is that I gotta fix this watch today, so, does anyone knows where I can buy a Watch Spanner here in NYC, preferably around the Midtown are? Thanks,
-Alex

Wow, $28? That sounds excessive. I've been quoted around $8-10 at repair/jewelry shops on the upper east. Maybe you could ask around at some other repair places and my guess is that unless it's some exotic type of case back, you'll be able to find someone to do it for a lot cheaper. What type of watch is it?

Thing is, a decent case opener to fit the majority of types of watch cases will likely cost you a lot more than $28. And I think places that sell that kind of specialized tool are rare, even in NYC. IMHO, changing your own batteries is not worth it unless you have a large collection or just want to do it for the practice/fun of tinkering. If you really need it done today, have it done by whomever gives you the lowest quote.

You could also try asking over at the TimeZone watch repair forum, but I think you'll have a hard time turning anything up. Good luck, and certainly let us know if you find a good source for watch tools!

Try the Diamond District.

I just got back, I got the spanner tool from DRS Findings over at 56 W 47th Street. They sold it to me for $9.50. And I also got the new battery for $2.49 over at Duane Reade. I will now try to put the watch back together.

This is really weird, the new battery pops out of the socket and the old battery holds in just fine. Both abtteries are the same mode, but the old one is Panasonic and the new one is Duracell.

I'm a good customer at a local jeweler and she does it for free

Lucky you.

I just found out that the new battery is lithium, it starts with DL. I gotta get the CR.

Yay! I finally got it!

I had to hold the battery and watch for like 3 minutes until it was not popping out of the watch. The watch works fine now. The CR type of batteries have this dotted/textured undersurface, and the DL batteries (lithium ones) have flat/smooth undersurface.

Just a cheap old Nautica watch that I got on the eBay for $15.00. It looks decent.

My Piaget watch had a problem with the auto movement and Tourneau could not fix it. It was shipped to Swiss and cost me $1000.
