Hi All, I may be putting myself out there right now but I'm wondering what your feelings are toward putting a watch fob through a lapel hole. I noticed some examples while wandering the halls of social media sites and thought they looked pretty neat. Here's an example:

Very affected in this day and age. Can work, in a very dandy way, if you really know what you're doing and it fits in with the rest of your style/life. So if you're going to do it, make sure the rest of your outfit is impeccable in every respect, and the chain & fob are high quality. As with many things, the adage of "if you have to ask..." may apply, but the final judgement is of course your own.

(the most I personally go with pocket watches is the occasional wearing with a waistcoat, the chain threaded through the appropriate buttonhole).

Historically inaccurate. Flashy. Tacky.

You should go with the traditional look that Holdfast suggested.

Ok if put through the back of the buttonhole so that you just see a bit of chain and the bar through the button hole. We used to have a "conservative" politician in England called Alan Clarke that did this look.

You can also get a button fob that is intended to be inserted through the buttonhole. e.g.,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTIQUE-14K...ATCH-CHAIN-AND-SHIRT-BUTTON-FOB-/161153146824
However, my understanding is that these were worn inside the jacket, so that button would be inserted into a buttonhole on your vest or jacket. To put it into your lapel would be impractical, therefore only for show in a very odd way. Like wearing a wristwatch on the outside of your coat sleeve, or using extra belts as garters.

Keep the metallic chains and fobs in the waistcoat or inside the jacket. Wouldn't say no to a simple leather fob on a tweed or serge, though.

Holdfast has it. Wear a pocket watch with a vest and put the fob through one of the lower button holes. Classic.

The right person could get away with this but many would think it odd or affected,
