Dear all, I ran across this specimen at the MOMA last month, but somehow a niggling "do you really want to buy a watch in a museum" feeling prevented me from pulling the trigger. Does anyone know of anything similar out there? I'm thinking silver metal, silver or white dial. Thanks all!

Not much of a watch expert but i think a Stowa Antea or a Citizen Stiletto is similar to what you're looking at.

I would also check out some offerings from JLC for a more expensive alternative. Very, very nice!

But! Why not get the Ole Mathiesen that you were looking at? I find them quite beautiful. No pedigree to speak of perhaps, but certianly better than most fashion watches. Ole Mathiesen is a watchmaker in Copenhagen, Denmark, an AD for most well-known brands but also producing their own line of watches with swiss movements.

Another thought as well, how about a vintage Omega? That is certainly a very classy alternative, with a lot of soul. Check out some 60s Omega Seamaster De Ville models for example, very nice. Try eBay or the usual watchsites (timezone.com etc) to get some idea of what is available.

I love items from museum shops - and MOMA is one of my favorites. I have a lot of respect for the principles of design illustrated through the products they are willing to sell. Don't know anything about the maker whose label is shown, but the MOMA watch surely has the most sophisticated design, including proportions. What was their price (retail, if on sale)?

It was $800, IIRC. And darn it! I was in Copenhagen last summer...

There are a lot of options out there! The first to come to mind is Piaget.

for $800 i'm assuming (or at least i hope, for your sake) that it's a mechanical watch. for that price, i'd get something like a vintage omega, or a new tissot. i'd never buy that nomos, stow, baume blah blah... nor any other brand like that, but that's just me.

True, at first I actually thought that the Max Bill design was the one that the OP had seen.
