I had the President too and it is a PITA to wear because it doesn't have any microlinks or safety clasp. The Sub does, and you get a custom fit all the time.

Keep the rest in the bank or get a couple more watches.

+1, and there is no rush on step 2.

He wants a rolex, go get a sport rolex, and keep browsing for the right dress watch.

For formal events only a thin gold or platinum watch on a leather strap is acceptable. No watch is more appropriate. No bracelet watch should be worn.

For business a day-date is tacky in yellow gold. A daytona is the only Rolex I would consider, other than a vintage plastic crystal submariner.

Twotone's suggestions are spot on. I'd get a Breguet for formal occasions with that kind of cash. For everyday use I'd probably get a JLC or Patek or IWC. Or, for something unique I'd go to RGM Watch and have something made up custom.

Personally, I have an IWC Ingenieur, and IWC Mark XII limited edition EF in titanium, and a vintage Lognines in gold on a black leather strap. The first two are daily wears and the later is for formal occasions. I have had a JLC MasterBlack Memovox, Tudor Sub (plastic crystal), and several other mid-high end pieces over the years. JLC and IWC are my favorite brands. But, I love the style of Breguet.

that Rolex is nothing but a status symbol for a african war criminal in the 80s. If rolex is a must then i can reccomend the 1- Rolex Milgauss

2 - Rolex Cellinium

The oyster, daytona and submariner all have large bezels and tend to stay outside the cuffs, whereas the cellinium and milgauss are thinner and can go under to give a smarter complete look, if it is for fomal wear he wants the watch for. If he does want the oyster please persuade him to another colour, "gold rolex" ? Really ? :/

f.cking nailed it

White gold. Pop off the metal band and slap on a black croc or something more suitable.

Too big for formal no matter what. It's a matter of fixing the watch to make it appropriate, which for $40k is ludicrous.

If it must be a Rolex IMO one of the nicest looking ones is pictured in this thread. The white gold one with blue face can be had for around $20k. Use this for everyday wear and spend the other $20k on a wafer thin more formal watch.
