Why is it recommended that whites be washed in warm or hot water and that colors be washed in cold? I've often wondered.

I seem to get whites clean by washing in cold water, and am reluctant to try warm to avoid shrinking, but if someone can explain why this is supposed to be done I might give it a try.

Higher temperatures more easily fade colors. White does not fade (although white on raised logos can chip off). More and more white undergarments are being given "Machine wash cold" labels.

White cotton garments are dyed white and have a tendency to fade to gray, their natural color.
