Often times when I peruse the forum I see people ask the proverbial question with respect to consideration of purchases or actual purchases: Is this a good deal? I've found myself wondering the same thing in the past. As with many others here, I have made my fair share of purchases on the forum as well as the bay. I have also elected not to pull the trigger on certain items wondering if was really a good deal. I know a lot of this can be subjective, in terms of the value one assigns to an item is based somewhat on what that item means to that person. Anyway, I'm interested in what members feelings or rationale for what the consider is a good deal or not. I'll start of with one of my recent acquisitions -

Haha, ur kidding right? Obviously, I recognize that the original price of the shoes were $452. However, I don't necessarily equate good deals based solely on how much less than the original price an item may be. In fact, until I discovered this forum I thought 40% off at the GAP was as good as it could possibly get. You guys have taught me a lot and I value the opinions espoused here. Additionally, a pair of discounted tassel loafers may mean more to a person without a pair vs. a person who has multiple pairs.

I appreciate ur response and perhaps you might save me some money in the future. I know the value of an item is what someone is willing to pay for it. However, I guess true value can be based on a person's needs, their individual taste, coupled with what they are actually willing to pay.

It is only a good deal if it fits you and you will wear it, or you can flip it for a profit.

Great response. My intent is to wear them. Notice I said "intent" because more often than not I acquire items that I either don't get around to wearing or wear sparingly.

Having purchased much on the bay, my attitude is not to think of the price once something is purchased. On the bay, you're only slightly more foolish that some other person, and in life, that's not bad. Now, if you did purchase those loafers for $495 retail, then you might be concerned about the cost. I can't take a girl out for dinner for less than $100. So, two pairs of shoes that will look great even after 10 years, or dinner with a girl that is guaranteed not to hold up as well after 10 years. You can keep those loafers in the closet as long as you like, but the girl, well ... And when what the last time that your shoes give you **** about not taking them out enough?

This is an excellent perspective and your point is well taken. ($100 plus on a date that lasts a night vs. less than $100 for shoes that can last 10 years) I guess I got pretty good deal unless that date resulted in marriage down the ten year line.

The dislike of tassel loafers are matter of taste or preference. I am also told that a man's profession somewhat dictates their professional style. However, I do know that there are several lovers of tassel loafers evidenced by the ode to tassel loafer threads out there on the internets.

Finally, if these

are good enough for this guy

then I certainly don't have a problem wearing tassel loafers.

Is this a good deal at <$200 used? I'd have fun wearing it, its a cotton and Hickey Freeman, not one of my brands, and I've bought Brioni for less than that.

Seersucker/pincord is one of those items you may pull out 1 time each year. Considering that, I wouldn't pay more than $100 on a seersucker coat. New.

A few years back I found a PRL blue/white seersucker jacket at Marshalls my wife loved when I tried on. It was my size, was side vented and was only $49. New.

I wore it around the store then put it back, cause, when am I really gonna wear this?
