Was thinking of getting some kind of cologne

First of all, not sure if I spelled that right, hoping I did though, but can anyone confirm for me?

I've never really used them in the past, but figured it's something I could start. I've only had a few and I use them up fairly slowly (since I don't just drench myself in them like most guys do, example are my brothers, and it pisses me off and makes the place smell). Anyways, what do you guys think about this one:

I've been told good things and it's pretty affordable.

Also, what's the rule with cologne? Do I only use it on special occasions, or is any time good?

I posted this on another forum, and got a few suggestions, but after doing some google searches, it seems like the one my friend IRL suggested trumps theirs, still I'll post what they said so that you guys can compare.

Big Pony
Sex Panther

Can you guys help me out here, there's too much to choose from and I know almost nothing to begin with.

Ah, yes. The fragrance world is somewhat overwhelming at first, eh? Anyway, lemme hit the high points:

1.) I'm in the camp that believes cologne should be used regularly. What's the point of shelling out on a bottle if you aren't going to use it?
2.) 1 Million is supposed to be good. Smells kind of like bubblegum, in a good way. It's also supposed to last a while before the smell fades, which is nice.
3.) If you're buying on Ebay, make sure the seller has good feedback. Fragrance fakes are fairly common, especially for popular scents like 1 Million.
4.) L'Homme is another good choice. It isn't very strong, and doesn't last particularly long, but it's safe (pretty much everyone likes it) and versatile (works just as well with a suit as a night on the town). I don't like Curve, but it's inexpensive and nets a lot of compliments. I don't really like Big Pony, and wouldn't recommend them (after all, if a company releases 4 scents at once, do you think very much work went into them? Longevity is bad and you can get much better juice for the pricepoint). Can't speak for Sex Panther, but I'd imagine it would be a nice conversation starter, if nothing else.

If you're serious about this, the addicts at Basenotes are a good resource. They have reviews and an active forum dedicated to cologne.

(Also, your spelling is fine.)

There's a thread in Health and Body called "Scent/Fragrance of the Day" where all the perfumistas hang out. I think you'll get some good responses if you post there.

Be very wary of buying 1 Million on ebay. The really big sellers are often counterfeited. Moreover, it's so popular that you'll end up smelling like lots of other people if you wear that.

EDIT: There's also a thread called "Fragrance: Spring Top Favorites" that should give you lots of good ideas.

I usually use cologne every time I go out. You should probably pick up a few scents for different occasions so you can mix it up a bit. Quality cologne will also last you quite a while if you use it right.

You should also always smell a cologne before you buy it. A cologne that smells great on one person might be pretty bad on another. Definitely be careful about buying on eBay, too!

My general cologne use:

Hollister Body Spray and bath & Body Works for situations where I'm "roughing it". Camping on the beach, hiking etc.
These Body Sprays are loads better than stuff like AXE.

Abercrombie & Fitch Cologne and PacSun store cologne for daily use.
These aren'texactly cheap, but they're alot better than the low end offerings form Ralph Lauren etc.

Davidoff Cool Water at night or when I'm dressed up.
my favorite cologne for the last 10 years. It's works so why change it? Sometimes I buy the limited edition versions too.

Seriously, is there a cologne called sex panther? That was from the movie Anchorman, and I don't know if it's real.

My 2 cents on cologne - make sure you try it on YOUR skin before forking over $50-$100 a bottle. Your skin will react differently to different colognes, so make sure you don't just buy it if someone else had it on, and "it smelled good." Walk into a store and spray on the inside of your arm. Walk around for 15 minutes and see how the smell evolves. If it smells good, then buy it.

Regarding choices - I have used Gaultier's Le Male since 1998. More recently, D&G's The One (closest to the discontinued 'By') and Terre D'Hermes. General rule of thumb - light, airy, clean smells during the day, more warm, woodsy heavy scents for the evening. Not set in stone by any means, so experiment away. Good luck!!

Yeah that's good advice, I'd try it on your own skin first...

I actually like D&G's Pour Homme - probably my favorite!
