We call it "super underwear" or "stilongs" (legs only). In sports it's often called "base layer". If you want wool you should look for merino wool. Those are the lightest and best. Dale, Dovre and Bjørn Dæhlie are all good brands. Not sure if Bjørn Dæhlie and Dovre is sold outside Norway, but Zappos has Dovre leggings: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/46170553/c/3.html EDIT: Turns out I remember wrong. Dæhlie does not have any base layer products, only mid layer (what you wear over the base layer). Vegard Ulvang on the other hand has a Ulvang wool base layer line, distributed by Swix in the U.S. Check out the "bodywear" section of his site.

Filson Merinos (very warm) or Zimmerli merino/silk longies ( not quite as warm but you can wear them inside without melting).
