Really soft, warm in the winter, cool in the summer.

They are relatively expensive though ($26 a pair)

They do wear well, I have pairs that are 5 years old and worn frequently.

Smartwool is pretty highly rated stuff. I use it for the most part in wintertime and it rocks.

What I like about Smartwool socks is that they're near indestructible. I use them with cleats for frisbee and throw them in the wash and they hardly show any wear. A lot of the other merino I get off of STP clearance is fuzzy and stretched after a couple of wears.

Merino is definitely the way to go though.

+1 on Smartwool.

and surprisingly for a pair of socks primarily designed for athletic use, my Thorlos are also quite warm.

Those thermorhair socks are very tempting, but a little bit too much. I think I will go with some smartwool socks. Thanks guys!

I just have to pick out a pair or two which may take a while

Yeah for sure - once you go merino - you don't go back !

And on the same topic - its great for t-shirts and mid-layers too.

Fairly obscure New Zealand company called Icebreaker is what I like the most.

www.icebreaker.com

Its expensive in stores here in Toronto, but usually I order online from Backcountry or Travelcountry when they have their semi-annual sales.

great stuff - won't go back to cotton t-shirts again.

When function > style, Smartwool's hard to beat. Not that they're hideously gauche, they're just not the best looking socks in the world.

+1 for Smatwool. I picked up a few pairs from STP a while back and they've held up well.

Off topic

You may want to try MEC, they have a selection of merino tshirts and long sleeve shirts. Based on construction and country of origin, I'd wager some are made at the same factory as icebreaker

Sierra Trading Post, check the support page (and use the link

).

I personally wear military surplus boot socks and prefer them over smartwool for function. They are super cheap through sportsmansguide.com and they are a blend of nylon, wool and cotton that keeps my feet warm and dry where all-wool socks tend to make them sweat. I get them in packs of 12 pairs or something and they last forever. I ride in these things in 20 degree weather, where the wind chill is something like 0 degrees or less and my feet are toasty.
