Wardrobe inserts to prevent carpet beetles, moths and other beasties

A friend had a recent bout of carpet beetles in their home, which we think came from a bird's nest in the loft. It was relatively easy to treat but did destroy some of her clothes beforehand!

I wondered if you could recommend any wardrobe inserts as a preventative measure for such beasties as well as moths for my own home, what with prevention being better than holes in clothes!

My local dry cleaner sells little round cedar blocks you can either attach to hangers or just leave in drawers. I think I've seen them in places like Robert Dyas and B&Q too. Cheap and cheerful, but they seem to do the trick (touch wood... almost literally!). They're meant for moths though, so I don't know if they'd have any effect on other creepy-crawlies.

If you live in the USA look into Cedar Oil. The beasties hate cedar oil. If you live in Canada you are out of luck as the precious oil is banned. A little goes a very long way. You can dilute it and using a spray bottle, apply into the shoes.

Great tips chaps. According to my internet readings, cedar chips and oil does deter, as do mothballs.... but mothballs smell bad and are possibly carcinogenic !
