Hi everyone!

Currently i do not even have the basics or they do not fit correctly at all, so building a wardrobe from near enough nothing starting with basics. I am based in the UK so outlets here would be appreciated but if you give me an idea of what i am looking for will happily go have a research myself.

T-shirts crew neck

These are the colours i was considering:

  • True Navy - is this a good shade of navy or is darker / lighter better?
  • Heather Grey - is a light grey such as heather good or is it better to go for a darker one?
  • White
  • Not black as this apparently makes you look like a server in a restaurant?
The retailer i wanted to get these from is GAP but they never have them in stock. Any other good places to get a nice fit and quality for basic crew necks? My research has pointed to GAP being the best bang for buck on these in terms of quality and price but would love some other suggestions please.

Jeans

Levi's 511.

Shoes
These are the only casual shoes i have:

I also have these pair of brown brogues

What else do i need to get in terms of shoes and styles, colours? I have a black pair but they are horrible just getting me by job.

Appreciate any help! Thanks

Good idea, Ebay is a brilliant introduction, but more when you've got an idea of what you're after. What do you intend spending on shoes?

Think shoes are going to be expensive i expect to pay between £50 - £100 .. But wonder if it is worth getting cheaper styles while i get started and if they wear out in a year so be it, i will know i have used them / like to wear them and can then invest in some expensive good quality ones?

Get some from Ebay. Look for your size in these makes and it will be a good start: Loake, Alfred Sargent, Barker, Cheaney, Church, Grenson, Sanders and Shipton & Heneage and see what comes up. I don't know your size, but look at these, for example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CHEANEY-...145533?hash=item239b869bbd:g:dHcAAOSwa2ZalA1k https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Joseph-C...870954?hash=item3b04a3242a:g:s58AAOSw4vJapAKZ https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-...205195?hash=item3b0498fb8b:g:3qcAAOSwr21amWor https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Loake-Br...275784?hash=item1a46ff2448:g:rs0AAOSw81panpm3
If you keep your eyes open you'll easily get yourself the start of a good selection of shoes.

We have been talking to another guy about many of the same topics. I posted a bunch of pics there as well as many instructions... I would suggest reading the post on this section called:

I REALLY NEED SOME HELP WITH NEW WARDROBE - REALLY STRUGGLING

A pair of Brown derby shoes and chinos could help.

For t-shirts I would suggest David Gandy line of t-shirts from Marks and Spencer. They are SUPER soft and are a mix of modal and cotton. Will be easy for you being in UK to visit a store or order online. They offer free returns. You better be in shape though as they are fitted.

I would get a couple whites and one each of navy, black, and grey.

Avoid black jeans and get a pair of dark indigo plain jeans.

Thanks for suggestions I can not find these David Gandy tshirts the only ones I can find are lounge wear / pyjama types. Do you have a link by any chance please?

Why do you say to avoid black jeans? Should the dark indigo jeans be plain no fade?

I am a sucker for a Black Chelsea boot. Goes with so much stuff.

Do black Chelsea boots go with a lot more than a dark brown? Is there any colour they wouldn't work well with? Also wondering how back would look with light blue jeans,in my very limited knowledge I have always thought brown shoes look better with blue jeans

Valid question. But not a simple answer. Most dudes on this forum will tell you to go brown over black. That being said, I was not necessarily saying go Black Chelsea before anything else. He has a pair of Brown Wingtip Brogues. Someone else recommended some brown Derby's I believe. I just like to balance my shoes between brown and black so I have some options. I was just saying I am a sucker for them (and they are a great choice).

As far as with the jeans go...I pretty much exclusively wear dark shades of jeans. These are more versatile as they are easy to dress up, or dress down. If I were to wear light to medium jeans, I would more likely wear a white sneaker with them or a casual loafer as they are more casual. If I am wearing dark jeans and a blazer/sport coat (I have many blazers/sport coats but regularly wear a grey one), it goes great with black or brown boots/shoes. I think the black Chelsea boots look great with dark jeans. If you get the right Chelsea boots they can even go with dress slacks or *gasp* certain suits. I think back works better in this case.

So really it depends. But black works in most cases. Black with browns you have to be careful, but overall it's pretty safe. However, I don't subscribe to most of the conventional "no brown in town" or black is only for after dark...blah...blah...blah... :)

I agree. I would never wear black shoes, or boots, with jeans.
