Well, that's a good place to start. I've been doing that a bit but probably need to devote a day to browsing the big department stores. Thanks.

seriously, look around the forum, ask some questions, take note of what you like. my work doesnt involve me wearing suits, and i pretty much can go the whole day in polos, jeans/chinos and sneakers but after this thread i have learned a lot which i have put to good use- specially in making good impressions with people i meet for business.

Will you be meeting with people? That is the main thing that determines your wardrobe. If not, you can wear whatever. If so, what impression do you want to give them?

Mack(11211?) is a playwright - maybe he can chime in.

Sorry...did a poor job of expressing myself again. I really need to think before I post, especially at night.

As we do with most people who post a "pick me a wardrobe" question (which is always welcome): what situations/events do you see yourself needing clothes for? What do you already have that you think you will continue using? And what kind of thing do you like?

Maybe flip through the Sartorialist's blog to see if any sort of style catches your eye. Then we can point you toward more specific ideas.
