Everyday, to and from work, I have quite a bit to carry - lunch, papers, glasses, phone, etc. Can anyone recommend a canvas bag that would not be hideous and can do the job? I'd really want a big brown paper bag, but those don't hold up, and I'm not so keen on getting a new paper bag everyday.

I got the Filson Zippered Tote in tan color recently because I was in the same predicament as you. They also sell a non-zippered version for easier access. It is my everyday work bag and it can fit all that you mentioned plus more. I personally wanted one large compartment over a bunch of pockets and separate partitions within the bag. The handles are long enough that it can become a shoulder bag. I personally don't like putting bags on my shoulders and wish the handles were shorter so that I could carry it more like a briefcase and it wouldn't hang so low. But that's just personal preference. I bought it on ebay for about $10 off retail + free shipping. You can wait and hunt for better bargains if you want.

I've had a Filson zippered tote for years and it's great. Use it to carry tools and miscellaneous gear.

That said, LL Bean's totes are perfect for what you're describing and a lot cheaper. Now you can even customize the color scheme and add an extra pocket or zippered top. Nice if you don't want it to look like a beach bag.

Go to a military surplus store and pick up a compression bag.

That or a briefcase.

Or a tote like Epperson Mountaineering, or the million branded totes that brands offer (Engineered Garments, Apolis, etc. I think all have some with their branding along the side)
