Wallets: How much would you pay?

I need to buy a new wallet as the one I own is falling apart.

How important is a wallet to one's style (ie. the wallet itself; not the amount of money in it).

I'm thus wondering if I should shop for a nicer/expensive one or just pick up the cheapest thing I can find.

Opinions?

Find the right functionality - pockets, size. etc. - then pick aesthetics (some us sit on our wallets all day and so don't care what it looks like, some need green pebbled leather) then minimize price. I have a slim wallet, in chestnut, that I spend $45 every couple of years replacing.

The way I see it is that there's no real universal level of importance for any object. It depends on each person's wardrobe. Spending $100 on a wallet for me, for instance, would give me a good level of satisfaction since I have a wallet for 10 bucks that I picked up at the flea market 5 years ago. However, I would RATHER spend $100 dollars on something else, since I get MORE satisfaction out of for instance $100 spent towards a new pair of shoes.

So basically I didn't answer your question at all. If you want a wallet, and it's the first thing on your "to buy" list, then spend as much as you'd like!

I have paid up to $300 for a wallet that I liked, it has to be something that stands and is unique, as a guy its one of the few accessories you carry and its only out of your pocket for a sec so its something I think you should invest in if you want it to be noticed.

I have an Etro card holder that I spent $175 on. It's slim and is perfect since I rarely carry cash.

This. I love my $5 Mexican made wallets with embossed burro or cowboy. (They gave me a free chain as well.)

I bought a Cartier wallet 15 years ago and it still looks good..

I bought so many cheap ones before and they were gone in one or two years .

Invest in a good one..

Just picked up my first nice wallet from Aspinal of London. It was worth the money and I can tell it's going to last a lot longer than the Dockers wallet I just got rid of.

There's an old rule of thumb that says you should spend on a wallet about how much you plan to carry in cash, on average, in the wallet. So if you carry $200, spend $200. And so forth.

Given that I carry almost no cash these days, I'm forced into a dilemma. Right now I've got a dark brown Tumi card wallet that wasn't absurdly expensive or anything, but wasn't so cheap as to look tacky. It has lasted about six years so far, and it's still looking almost as good as new. Damned thing takes a serious beating and doesn't show it.

I'm considering investing some decent coin in a higher-end wallet, especially since I've learned to start caring for wallets and not beating them to hell and back. I don't wear watches, so I figure I can always drop a little bit of what would have been a watch budget on a really nice wallet.

Bought AE cordovan wallet more than a year ago when it was on sale. Paid like $100 for it. Looks brand new even today.

the most i ever spent was 175 for a prada money clip wallet and i wouldn't hesitate to spend ever more than that. like shoes and watches, i pay for quality and craftsmanship.
