I will be attending a wake this afternoon. I have never attended one. Are black suit and tie (both of which I own) appropriate? Required? I was not personally close to the person who passed, so I want to be as muted as possible, and I won't wear a suit if it will make me seem out of tune, if you understand what I mean.

There is one previous thread on this, but I wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks.

Thanks very much, lawyerdad. I didn't see your post before I went, but I wore exactly what you suggested--black and gray tie, black suit. It was perfectly appropriate without being too much, which I think a black tie might have been. Plenty of guys went without jackets.

For future reader purposes, Lawyerdad's cultural observation is right on--for example, the person who passed was far too young to leave us, so though she was from a world where suits are worn for life's milestones (if that makes any sense), a lot of guys there probably didn't even own decent suits yet. Thus some worker bees like me were in suits, while some guys had khakis, ties and no jackets, etc. Everyone was of course respectful, which is more important on occasions like these than the dress code.

Funerals are different, but for wakes just wear what you can to show respect.

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
