I think that they can look great without a suit, you just need some color (on the shirt for example). Edit: Oh, and you need to wear slacks to make it work IMO.

I think the consensus is that if waistcoasts are going to work casually at all, they must have a self-fabric back instead of the silk or rayon or whatever.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most current jeans and pants would make waistcoasts look ridiculous. A waistcoat is meant to be worn with pants on your natural waist. Low-rise pants create that gap between the bottom of the vest and your pants with **** poking through. Makes it look like you can't dress yourself, IMO. This kind of thing is all over the jcrew site.

Make sure if you are going to wear jeans , dont have them hanging round your arse, wear them right
make the sure if the shirt is bright wear light jeans
and if the shirt is dark then wear dark jeans
and roll the sleevs up also

Personally, I love the look of a vest when it's paired well with everything else. The current trend of the vests that are almost a t-shirt material is horrible though. It needs to be something that keeps a good shape, such as someone already mentioned with a cord, moleskin, etc.
