Vivienne Westwood Gold Label?

Hi all,

I do not know whether I should put this thread under the Men' Clothing or Streetwear.

I am just curious regarding Vivienne Westwood because she seems to be a legend in Japan and highly regarded in Europe but her pieces were not well sold in the US (the pricing for her pieces seem to be exorbitant).

My understanding so far is that she has four labels under her name (Red Label, Anglomania, Man and Gold Label) with Gold Label is the only label that she is working on and directly involved (the Red and Anglomania are handled by her design teams while her husband is doing the MAN line).

Her Gold Label that is supposed to be her highest line (Haute Couture) therefore the questions I have here are regarding whether her pieces are actually justified the price tag.

Frankly speaking, I actually like some of her pieces that are on the normal border but wearable.

Last time there was a Gold Label 3 pieces suit (that came from her "Anglomania" collection year 1993, not Anglomania label) on ebay for $900 (with the actual price was around 835GBP in 1993).

- Does $900 worth the vintage Gold Label suit?
- Did her older seasons have superior quality compare to the latest season?
- Do Gold Label pieces actually have a superior quality of craftsmanship?
and
- What year did she actually launch the Gold Label?

Thanks in advance.

$900 for ANY vintage suit sounds way too high... unless Elvis died while wearing it. $900 for a Vivienne suit sounds ludicrous... and it seems as though the seller is hoping to catch a collector.

I like Vivienne, though I'm no expert in her lines. I've had a lot of the MAN pieces, and they are stylistically fun though not crafted superlatively (I think they are made by Staff sPa.) I'm not too up on Gold Label, though while it might be the "highest" end, it probably isn't Haute couture (by definition).

I think you should only spend $900 on that suit if you REALLY REALLY want a vintage Vivienne suit. If you want a superlative suit, in general, and that is your goal... then look elsewhere.

Thanks John and LK for the info.

Yes, when I did the research, Gold Label is only shown in Paris but as far as I understand, the GL only started recently (past 8 years) I believe and not from 93. Unsure either.

I guess you are right, that price is probably for a VW collector.

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
