Well, my wife and I will be going there for the weekend (fifth wedding anniversary

) and I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on specific areas to visit, see et.c. We'll be staying in Pinetop (as it seemed to be in a good location). We'll get to see trees and water, nice change from Tucson - will be a nice long drive, too

I have found a few interesting hiking trails and such. Any other suggestions?

SKALOGRE: A long time ago, I visited a friend who was working at the Whiteriver reservation. The White mountains are beautiful. However, that was about the extent of the areas of interest because it basically very underdeveloped (not a bad thing).

We went over to NM to see ancient Hopi and Navajo dwellings, burial grounds, etc. In some, there were writings by the Spanish conquerors and drawings by the Indians well before any Europeans arrived. Fascinating.

Stelios -

Some beautiful scenery down on the East Fork of the Black River. Lots of elk herds to see.

Also - definitely go to Charley Clark's in Pinetop for dinner at least one night. Great food.

Greer is gorgeous as is Hannigan's Meadows which is not too far away.

Not much shopping unless you're into cowboy stuff... you can get great deals on Wranglers, boots and hats however.

Have a fun weekend!

Oh, no worries about shopping, did not really expect anything. I wil make a note of the places you mentioned though (elk herds, that must be a sight to see

). Thanks!

Bachbeet:
Thanks for info. I was looking at some of the areas with the petroglyphs, I am trying to formulate a reasonable itinerary, seeing how we only have a weekend. Then again, we rarely have days off together and it is our anniversary so we are going to make the most of it.

P.s. Brad, how is the little one faring? Come to think of it, how is its sibling handling things now

Hey, my mom lives in Clay Springs, practicaly across the street. I'll be going in June. that is where I treck out into the high desert to do landscape painting. Just take time to enjoy the scenery and the weather rolling in. I go every year, looking to maybe have a studio out there one day.
Pretty drive is to take the highway to Peyson, lots of national forest.

All right, thank you everyone. Managed it there and back. Brad, we went to Charlie Clark's Saturday. My wife got the steak salad, I got a ribeye. Was cooked past medium well which I asked for but it tasted pretty good. Suffice to say that my wife wanted Saturday evening to go back there for the salad. And Sunday before we left. However, we went to Tuscan Glass instead on Saturday. Was rather nice. I was hoping to try their elk but they were out... food was good though.
