I will be visiting the Lansing and Detroit areas this Christmas, and will certainly be bored out of my mind. Any advice on where to shop, in terms of either selection or price? Are there any top quality malls, or outlet stores?

    Thanks in advance.

    In the Detroit Area:

    Birmingham:

Parks, Carl Sterr, Paul Cichini, Claymore Shop, Back in Time (watches), Uptown Birmingham 8 (art theater)

    Royal Oak:

Metals in Time (watches), Burn Rubber (sneakers), Orvis, Main Theater (art theater)

    Troy:

Somerset Collection (mall): Neimans, Saks, Nordstrom, Marshall Fields (Thomas Pink within), Polo, Brooks, etc.

Troy also has a Nordstrom outlet and a "Syms", which is like a bad Filene's Basement.

    Auburn Hills:

Great Lakes Crossing (Outlet Mall): Neiman's Last Call, Off Fifth, Brooks Brothers Outlet, etc.

    Windsor, Ontario:

    Dak's Shoes

Please feel free to email me if you'd like specifics.

TCN's answer is perfect. I would just add the Van Boven shop in Ann Arbor--near the campus on State Street.

We've gotta send him to Zingerman's (deli extraordinaire) if he's heading to Ann Arbor. Â [IMG] I'm also going to hesitantly add L'Uomo in Bloomfield Hills to the lest if you like Testoni shoes.

Dak's Shoes in Windsor is, alas, no more.
It closed in September 2004, as its parent company Clarks found it doing insufficient business and thus pulled the plug.

Yet the Mephisto store is thriving . . . somebody shoot me.

I'm sorry to hear that; I was hardly a good customer, but I liked that place.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the suggestions and will definitely take a day and hit as many of these as I can. Is there anything of interest at all in Lansing?

Besides Michigan State Coeds? Not that I'm aware of.

Two restaurants I like in East Lansing/Okemos: The Evergreen Grill, and Dusty's Wine Cellar. They're not great mind you, but pretty good, especially Dusty's.
