Visible hem on cotton trousers/chinos

I plan to hem a few pairs of cotton pants (chinos and one pair of Incotex). Is there any rule of thumb on leaving the original hem on pants like these? I think it will probably look cleaner without it, especially if I hem them with little-to-no break.

Any advice?

To me, a visible hem dresses down cotton trousers. How do you plan to wear the pants in question?

I prefer to see the hem on chinos, invisible hem looks too Banana Republic to me.

I'll add that I generally agree with Ruben, although it depends on the chino fabric to some extent.

first, wash and shrink them before they are shortened. or allow a bit extra length for shrinkage .
also 1 1/4" is about right.
are you doing this yourself?

thanks tailor. no i am going to give it to a tailor for shortening. i dind't think about shrinkage but anyway i like my pants without break, so a little bit short would be nice.

I would recommend using the same hem the manufacturer originally provided. That means * same color thread * same thickness of thread * same number of stitches per square inch * same "distressed" look (if the hem currently shows a distressed look). The advise to wash (and I would say press) before altering should not be overlooked. For further information on this topic...
