My only watch that qualifies for this thread: ca. 1940s UG.

(cross post...) I have a question: I was given my Dad's old Omega De Ville a few years ago (I think he purchased it sometime between 1968-72). He added the solid gold bracelet after, presumably to accompany the gold casing (according to the Omega website, the watch is solid gold, but I find that hard to believe, actually...so perhaps it's gold plated?). Anyway, is the gold bracelet too bling-y, or otherwise in poor taste? Should I replace the gold bracelet with a leather strap? The proportions of the watch and the color of the gold make it quite understated overall, as far as my own view of gold watches go, but as an infrequent watch wearer, who wants to join the club, I'm trying to optimize the potential of this watch, without looking like a jerk. So, please advise? Thanks!

Either way, solid or not, its a beautiful piece. I recently made a strap for a very similar watch for a local customer. I think it looks fantastic on leather.

@DavidLane - Wow, thanks! That leather strap looks fantastic! This is precisely the direction I am strongly considering. It's a tough decision, though, as I'm torn between preserving it as "my father's watch" and "making it my own" so to speak. So perhaps I'll eave the bracelet (seems like an odity these days too, which I kind of dig...)? I also like that if I leave the gold, I don't have to consider matching the strap to my shoes too much, right? Anyway, not sure...

Also, this is what some cursory research provided (it seems this de ville did originally come with a leather strap and is indeed solid gold...huh...), but if anyone has further insight, feel free to share: https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-de-ville-omega-ba-166-0086

Put a leather strap on there, save the metal band, and wear it with any shoe under heirloom status. ;D

*Heirlooms are exempt from matching leathers or metals with outfit as they are sentimental pieces.

I'm all for the metal, but I'm just not the biggest fan of that exact perforated design.

No matter what strap you put on it, it will always be your Father's watch. Besides, you can always put the bracelet back on in the height of summer or to change it up.

Thanks...Just visited your site and will likely get in touch about a custom strap (I'm not sure about the details to prescribe via the form, so...)

This one is very comfortable but it feels so light on the wrist that I rarely ever wear it. I think I prefer just a bit more heft. But, it’s closing in on 50 years old and that Hi-Beat is still ticking away!

Thank you for posting, I love vintage Longines, especially their more understated designs like your piece. I have been slacking and wearing mostly non vintage if I even wear a watch.
