I'm holding out hope for a pre-moon Speedy with the 321 for a reasonable price, but I think that train may have left the station.I am inclined to agree, though I think that the Omega Seamaster/DeVille chronographs using the 321 movement are also strangely overlooked, though the prices for those have also been creeping up, especially with more exposure on well, Hodinkee. I think that the 145.018 is a great watch, for example.
Wow, what a thread! Just three pages in and we’ve already seen a red Sub along with a Mil-Spec Sub!
@Andy57 @Phileas Fogg , care to share the backstory on your beautiful pieces?
It's an utterly prosaic story. I buy all my vintage Rolexes from Fourtané in Carmel, California (as far as I know, the only Rolex authorized dealer allowed to also sell vintage pieces). I asked them to source a Red Sub for me a few years ago and this is what they came up with. It was originally sold in Hong Kong to someone with a western name. How it came to be in California I do not know.Wow, what a thread! Just three pages in and we’ve already seen a red Sub along with a Mil-Spec Sub!

I believe in the adage "buy the dealer", or something to that effect. Especially when it comes to vintage Rolexes. ?Thanks for sharing, Andy. When I have a watch in mind that I want, I do a lot of searching on my own, primarily on the Internet, but also by visiting shops or fairs. But I guess it makes sense to leave that to the professionals and have them do the legwork!
My condolences, PF. Not sure if it was issued to him or if he purchased it, but if it’s the latter, he had impeccable taste!
The Mil-spec Sub is probably my favorite vintage Rolex. Such a subtle, yet purpose-driven design.
