Hi,

I found some Ray Bans at an estate sale today. I've been scouring the net trying to figure out the model; I couldn't find a model no. anywhere on the frame-- haven't had any luck looking through photos online either. The lenses have a BL etching top-center, bridge and right arm are stamped "B&L Ray-Ban USA". Was hoping that someone could provide me with some information, other than they need to be cleaned. :)

These sunglasses are not vintage per se but they were my hands down favorite. I approximate them to have been an active model 10 years or more ago, could be closer to 15. I've been searching images more than I'd like to admit trying to get a model number and perhaps someone selling this frame. It's hard to find an oversized wrap where they dip down a bit in the nose area. The logo on the side is not printed on, its sort of a metal badge that I think was screwed on from the back side.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Scott,
Unfortunately, your sunglasses aren’t vintage glasses. You can see a RB on the left lense. Vintage one have a BL for Bausch and Lomb.
Besides, unfortunately, your glasses are fake because it’s not possible to something made in USA and have a RB on lenses. RB lenses are made in Italy by Luxottica and not by BL since 1999, when Ray ban brand was sold for Luxo by BL. And the white “ray ban” on right lense is a little bit fake too... Sorry ?

Hi Markus,
Your sunglasses are absolutely original ! It’s 90’s Wayfarer because there is a reference on the right arm (L2053). The case is original too, but it’s not exactly for these glasses. This kind of case is for Olympic Games Explorer 1994-1996. But the seller probably didn’t have Black Wayfarer classic case for your glasses. Actually, your case is rarer ?

Hi Charlesmax88,
thank you for the quick reply. I still have doubts on the originality of the glasses: Shouldn't be the nosepads in clear colour? On this pair they have the coulor of the frame. The BL-markings on the lenses: the letter L should be of 2 sigle barrels, but on this the horizontal is attached to vertical. The letter B is in one piece, the bow in one line, shouldn't here also be a little space?
Sorry for asking again, but because of this little differences I still question the originality of my glasses.
I hope we can clear these concerns,
thank you in advance,
kind regards,
Markus

Hi !
You’re right and that’s a good question !
Actually, you can be reassured for the BL problem. It’s depend of the year of production. I think the engraving technique changes at the end of 90’s. And the L is in two parts but the engraving technique is harder on the lenses, so the L seem to be in one part for the horizontal and the vertical part, but not really. I show you on original new old stock BL lenses.

About the Nosepad colour, it’s not easy to answer you, because you’re right. On tortoise shell wayfarer, it’s supposed to be clearer than the frame. Despite of this, there aren’t totally translucent as on DEKKO model. You have to see a little bit tortoise on the nose pad. So we can suppose that’s a Difference in the manufacturing procedure ?
In short of all the authenticity information I have, we can suppose your sunglasses are originals sunglasses.

Hi Charlesmax88,
thank you again for quick replying. I also made my homework and did some further researches. I found same statements as you just did here in a clear way. So now i'm pretty sure my RayBans are originals.
Thanks again,
kind regards,
Markus

Hi there folks. It's great to find an active space where some people have some expertise! I've been digging around for info on my vintage Wayfarers and I've found out quite a bit. For example, the code on the frame 5024 makes them the larger variant with a 50mm lens and 24mm bridge (rather than the standard 5022, with the narrower bridge). Interesting stuff.

What I haven't been able to find out is what the code on the temple/arm means. The first part "L2053" corresponds to what all the other 2024 Wayfarers have on them, so I assume it has something to do with that being the code for temples that match the frame? Maybe it has something to do with the colour (tortoise shell)?

The other thing that there is virtually no information on the internet about is the letters that follow the initial code on the temple. So mine has the following code stamped on the left arm: "L2053 WWAS". I have seen others with different codes but the same glasses, such as "L2053 SOAS" or "L2053 UUAS" or even the one attached here with "L2053 XRAW" on the right arm.

Clearly the codes mean something, but what? Any insights are welcome!

Hi !
In fact L2053 is the model code for WAYFARER I TORTOISE SHELL G-15 LENSES
But about the letters, I have no idea ! I thought maybe it could be where sunglasses was produced or the year. But I didn’t find this information too....

Thanks @Charlesmax88. That's helpful. So the code on the arm is the model and the code on the frame just indicates the size.

But those four letters must mean something. Someone somewhere must know!

So, I spent a bit of time hammering through creative google searches and I think you may be right that the code indicates date of production and some other things, maybe lens type and other information. The reason I think this is so, is by finding details on forums where collectors of microscopes and binoculars have been trying to decode the alphanumeric codes on their lenses made also by Bausch & Lomb. It would stand to reason that the company used similar coding in their eyewear. I'm not sure how one would go about finding the Rosetta Stone to decode it, however. I've attached a list from a binocular site that lists letter date codes up to 1986. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be sequential...

Woooww !! You’re really brave !! I’ve never seen this kind of docs !
But, yes, unfortunately, it doesn’t match..!
As you said, this is BL Rosetta Stone hahaha !

Did you find catalogs for all the serial number on the page where you find out this doc ?
Actually I’m trying to find serial number of each sunglasses I have, and it’s very very very hard. I would like to find out a BL catalog for professionals with all serial number of all products...

Thank you !

No, I have not found catalogues...yet. We'll see how obsessed I can get! I would think there's a lot of demand for this information, given how popular vintage Ray-Bans have become. Maybe the original poster who started this thread has some info.. but it looks like he's been absent since 2013??
