I was inspired by the shoe challenge thread several times to attempt to remove the CG coating on some Johnston Murphy Melton Cap Toe that I have. They were dark burgundy or the black cherry they used to have. The CG was wearing oddly and they looked weird. Lat night I got the itch to try it. My wife had a bottle of Acetone Nail Polish remover. So, I tried it. With the very first cotton pad, I realized it was going to work (as far as removing the color). I was not sure if it would remove the CG coating.
Here are some pics.
I did the other one, but only got about 3/4 finished when I ran out of acetone. It didn't take much, but the bottle was only about 10% full.
I tried the water drop test and it did not soak in. BUT, I am halfway considering stopping where I am at and keeping them the current color. I may not. I am going to see if I can brush them a little to get some shine. These are definitely experimental shoes. SO, if later decide to use furniture/wood stripper to take off the CG, I'm not out anything if I ruin them.
I wore my MUCH newer Alden Shell LWB the other day. So, I didn't want my vintage Florsheim to feel neglected.

Speaking of shoe laces (as we were earlier when the universe was telling me to stay home or wear loafers
@actionjbone that made me chuckle) does anybody have good advice or opinion on decent shoe laces. I want the thin dress shoe variety I usually like the waxed variety but really just want durability. I break shoe laces all the time. I'm sure part of it is because I am cinching them tight since my feet are narrow and part of it is because I wear vintage shoes that have old laces. SO, where do you get decent laces? I also need the longer ones. I have a few pair with 5 or even 6 eyelets and sometimes the laces are too short.
